Thread Starter
I want to install windows with my ubuntu but all of my 1 TB is partitioned to ubuntu. How do I split the partition? Also how much do I need to take off for windows like 200 gig's?

Windows itself I would say 40 GBs You can use gparted or patition magic. I suggest that you run a linux Live CD with one of these utilities and resize it that way. Knoppix is a good live disc with gparted on it.

Other than the 40Gb for windows seven just leave space if you would like to install games and or install other stuff like data.

200GB sounds like a nice round number for games, apps, and the OS.

Good Luck.

It can be done in windows at Control Panel\\System and Security\\Administrative Tools/Disk Management.

Or, If your creating a partition on a drive that all ready has an OS on it. You'll need to use gparted, because the OS's system files will be locked for moving so they need to be force moved by a program that can operate before the OS boots on start up.

The size of the partition for windows depends on what you plan to install but 50Gig is a safe size for Windows and plenty of programs. 100-200Gig if your a gamer.

gparted is well explained online and easy to use.

Edit:Beaten! Damn

I would recommend at least ~20GB for Windows 7 by itself, but if you want to add a bunch of programs or data you'll want quite a bit more. I don't remember what programs Ubuntu includes, but there used to be a fairly powerful partition manager on the Live CD. I would guess you could find it in the program library if it isn't installed already. Then it's just a matter of resizing the partition with the program, which should be fairly straightforward.

Also, here's a little guide you could read. I'm not sure whether it's outdated or not, but the process can't have changed too much.

windows minimum system requirements is 20GB but i assume your installing games and stuff... so anywhere in the 100-200 range would be good, depends on your needs

should pick up a gparted live disc, its just a disc that boots up and goes straight to gparted and its very nice to have laying around, thats how you will resize the ext4 partition and set some off for windows...

after the windows install, boot up the ubuntu live disc again, and reinstall grub with something along the lines of

grub-install /dev/hda

that will put grub back in your first hard drives mbr so you can boot both windows and linux

I got the Gparted up and now I don't know what to do. I click up on the top where it says partition and none of the options that open are available for me to click on. I can see that when I click on it one says "resize/move" that's what I need to click on right? Why can't I do anything on the program? Thanks for any help guys.

you cant do it while you are booted from the disc youll have to burn a gparted live disc and boot to that to edit your drive
