DOS Stress Testing? - Page 3

But it won't help him in the long run. He can't afford a SSD. Look at the rest of his rig; he's using spare parts and buying what he can. Do you remember when you had to do that, or was that never a problem for you?

If we're gonna keep arguing off topic I may as well contribute. A couple of points:

When the OP talks about a hypothetical RAID setup, he's talking about a RAID-0 array using his onboard controller. Effectively free - the cost of the two or more drives. Those of you saying "oh well that's still slow as ****" don't know what you're talking about. In 2006 I ran a 3 disk RAID-0 array, yielding 290MBytes/s sequential read. That's pretty decent, considering that was 5 years ago... HDD speeds have increased a lot since then, as has storage capacity.

"But ner ner ner it's sequential! I don't know what defragging a HDD is because I've only bought SSD's, obviously it can't work!" Well... Windows 7 isn't as stupid as you think it is. The same technology that tells windows 7 to turn off the defragger for your lovely little SSD is the same tech that organizes and defrags the boot files for your system. Over time Windows 7 will shuffle files around making it boot faster. My system boots in less than 15 seconds and my boot disk is worse than his..

Comparing IDE 133 to USB theoreticals is kinda retarded. The difference is that IDE 133 can actually achieve close to 133MB/s, where as USB 2.0 will only get around 40MB/s real world performance. Moreover, his Maxtor won't come anywhere near that limit... it will be around 40MB/s min - 70MB/s max. More than likely, the old maxtor drive is dying, which is why it's writing/reading so slow.

Thanks xDezor that helped a lot. And yes it problem is dying then because it was doing mayble like 5mb/s. I do relaly think SSD are awesome but going to wait for them to become the norm and drop heavily in price.

In the meantime, something like a 1TB F3 is nice for what it costs. Otherwise just find someone with too many hard drives and ask for one.
If you know anyone else who's into PCs they probably have at least one lying around. smile.gif

Edit: Oh and I can't help on the DOS burn test side of things, I wasn't that into PCs when DOS was in widespread usage and the most I ever did was flash a p5e to a rampage formula with it. tongue.gif
