Troubleshoot my friend's computer

Thread Starter
My friend has been having trouble with his computer for months. He's using the same tower, but had all his parts changed by another friend, except his cpu and his power supply. Yet the problem of random artifacting in games, not being able to patch a game ( League of Legends) properly, glitchy graphics like having all words in the options of Bad Company 2 turning into barcodes and random crashing still persists.

Could it be a bad psu or cpu ?

It could be the cpu isnt keeping up in the games and causing it to artifact but if the power supply isnt powerful enough it could be restricting the gpu's performance

Could we get alittle more info on his parts?

I believe artifact problems is the video card I would try to reinsert the card and update drivers for both the card and mobo chipset. Have you tried to reinstall LoL?

Bad PSU would just cut power and not cause those kinds of issues. CPU maybe but I'd chalk it up to corrupted drivers or GPU problems. It's unlikely but there is a chance of getting 2 faulty GPU's or something.

Has he tried reinstalling the OS from scratch?

he's got an amd athlon 64 x2 4200+ (which wasn't replaced) , a gt240, 2gbs of ram, and I'm not sure about his PSU

he has told me though, that his psu couldn't keep up with his old gpu, which had been working for at least a year... so maybe his psu is dying ?

Try updating the drivers to the new drivers they may well fix the problem.

Chance's are you will need to rma the gpu but the power supply by the sounds of it could do with being replaced

Drivers may be finicky
Sometimes switching hardware but same OS install doesn't even work.
I tried to move my HTPC Win7 OS install from P4 3Ghz + 2GB DDR, to Athlon X2 2Ghz + 2GB DDR2. No dice, had to reinstall the OS to be able to boot; thankfully it wasn't much trouble.

it sounds like a driver issue. But like others have said it could be the power supply is not strong enough to provide the graphics cards with enough power.
