Want to upgrade wisely. Suggestions?

Currently have:
  • Q6600 (@2.4) + Tuniq Tower
    P5nE-Sli
    4GB of DDR2 PC 6400
    GTX280
    BFG 800W PSU

I am much more into music/video production than gaming now, so lets think of this more as a powerful workstation for music and video processing.

My budget on upgrading is ~300$ (plus what I can get for my old equipment and a couple game consoles)

So lets just say my budget is quite possibly ~500$

I'd keep my 280 of course.

I'd like to have more memory and processing power.

I realize I'd require a new motherboard to get DDR3/newer socket so please help me find a logical upgrading solution.

I don't wanna just slightly upgrade my cpu. It would have to be significantly faster, so that's a priority.

I'd also probably need a new case so form factor is up in the air for now.

SB 2600k / motherboard / memory would be the best way to go - it would offer 8 threads and super fast speeds, but would certainly use up all $500 of your budget. If you want to go cheaper than that, you could grab something such as a used 1366 setup which would provide 8 threads and some other nice hardware.

Well if you're "really into music", I'd get a decent $30 soundcard to begin with. Then later on upgrade to a $100 one. In my opinion, when you upgrade slowly, you appreciate that higher end stuff more. So I wouldn't just buy the most expensive soundcard I could get my hands on without trying entry level stuff first for awhile.

How about headphones?

i7 950 $260

ASRock X58 Extreme $155

6gb Corsair Ram $69

That comes out to $484, so if you have enough left over you can get a nice CPU heatsink

I appreciate all your help.

How much of a performance increase are we talking here with a 2600K?

I already have a presonus Firebox which is a 200$ external soundcard. Also, I already stated that I have a tuniq tower cpu cooler.

I know what you mean. I've already done that. I already have an external firewire bus powered soundcard and a nice pair of 8" studio monitor speakers. I started producing about 4 years ago and I just got my first EP signed last month.

8gb G.Skill DDR3 2133 (2x4gb) - $99

Intel 2600k - $314

Asus P8P67 LE Rev. 3 - $139

Total: $554.97

My personal opinion is that it may be worth your time to save up something like $800 and spoil yourself with a whole new rig.

For one thing, you don't NEED a 2600K. Hyperthreading is great and all, but we're talking an extra minute or two gained in exports of videos/music. Is two minutes worth $100? Not really. Save $100 and get a 2500K. You can get a higher overclock on it.

Also, if you use CS5/CS5.5, you'll be able to use your 280 for it's CUDA processing power in exports and certain effects with Premiere Pro. I have a 2500K and I do HD video editing... It screams

2500K
ASUS P8P67 Pro
8GB of 1600MHz RAM, Ripjaws is pretty good
Corsair H70 to get some good OCs

And finally a good PSU:
Seasonic M12-II 620w 80 plus Bronze modular is $110 off newegg, and you wouldn't consume more than 300w so you could even go with a 520w and save $10.

You're right, OP prolly doesn't NEED the extra 2mb's of cache and hyperthreading. and with what I posted for him he'd be under his $500 limit. :-D
