5850 Fan Issue(Not working)

Hi!
Ok so.. I've had my 5850 for well over a year, and used it with a 2+ years old msi k9n2 sli platinum mobo. I bought the mobo used/demo(not the best decision but hey.. cheap) and have had some trouble with it since about 8 months ago. I first used a 4890, which went perfectly fine - but after having used the 5850 for a while i had some sudden shutdowns, which turned out to be because of overheating - caused by the fan not running at all.

This, I figured out during these overheatings, was due to my 5850 not fitting exactly into the chassie/mobo - I had two choices when placing it: either push it properly down on the back, but in this case it wouldnt fit properly to the fastening spots in front - or i could kind of "lock" it into position on the fastening spots, which didnt seem natural, but actually worked. From this moment on i had my computer lying sideways so it would stay in correct position, and well.. i havent had any trouble except after times ive moved my pc, and the card has gotten out of position. In these cases, the fan stopped working - but as always, everything else did.

Today, I once again had one of these overheating sessions, and to my despair, the "tricky" position didnt work - the fan still wouldnt run. After much back and forth, i came to the conclusion that i couldnt get it to work so i tried my second PCI-E slot - and the fan worked. After a few reboots and some cleaning of the old driver, after it having crashed with the new one windows downloaded(the old one was of some reason not used to operate the same card in a different slot), and it eventually worked. As im writing now however, i just experienced it shutting down on me again, and hey, the fan not working.

It does seem as if the card fits better in slot 2, and the fan worked - which means i dont really know what more to try out to fix this. After slot change and experiencing another shutdown, i noticed it was running at 127C which ofcourse means i shut off immediately - i will try to download proper drivers later, as i do not completely trust windows' autodownloading ability, but i doubt thats all it takes to fix this.

Ive considered a new chassie, as the old one clearly isnt perfect, and a new mobo - but id prefer not to, since my build is running every pre2011 game on absolute max, and all my needs are MORE than covered. Besides, the fan did run properly the first couple times after changing slot. Suddenly, probably on the last reboot, it didnt however. This means not the mobo nor the card is .. fried, destroyed or the likes - I think theres a proper solution that doesnt involve replacing physical parts, i just need to find it:)

Any other suggestions, thoughts or comments as to how i might solve this without really going out of my way?
All constructive comments appreciated:)

If the fan is not running at all, may i suggest buying aftermarket cooling to stop the overheating issue on the GPU.
See here: http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/detail?sArticle=22.%3F

Or

One of the slots on the mobo is faulty.

Or

Your not installing the card correctly or your not plugging in the power connecters into the PCB.
Good Luck.

Thx for replying. The fan usually works, but in some periods it doesnt until i change position of the card. i know this means its not properly inserted, but either my case or my video cart is wrongly constructed - doesnt fit perfectly because the attachment solution elevates the card abit. It fit much better in the other slot, and the fan worked on my first boots in it a few hours ago, until it .. didnt.

Anyways, after changing slot it seems i have to get all the drivers again, even though i have them - to avoid duplicate drivers etc i think ill use the integrated graphic card, remove all ati related drivers etc using your guide to ensure its not a software problem, and afterwards worry about the hardware challenges.

EDIT: Well.. i was about to try this when i realised that after changing slot, the few reboots that worked were before i closed the case AND fastened it. Which means it worked before i fastened->i unscrew the screws, tried to put the card in its .. natural position(didnt match the holes in the case to be honest) and voilá, my temps are back to beneath 40C, so i seem to have fixed it. Fan running etc. Oh, and that 127C i mentioned earlier.. that was SpeedFan showing a temp i dont have, so.. i dont know what temp i was up to. But it was high, and fan wasnt working - that i know.

Problem still not solved completely, since its fragile and my computer has to lay sideways to avoid my 5850 changing position too much - but hey, no problem anylonger, now its all up to me:)
