If you play a game with physx on high and you notice slowdowns - Page 2

First off, as was very briefly mentioned, MOST games that utilize physX API as the physics calculation engine DO NOT support running physX on the GPU. We refer to such games as using 'software' physX. On such titles, YES, overclocking your CPU will be of benefit.

2ndly, if you are running a game that supports GPU physX, then you should run physX on the GPU (assuming you have nV card that supports physX). In these games, OC'ing the CPU won't help w/the physX duties, but may still increase FPS because many games will cause at least some CPU bottlenecking to take place.

Now, an exception to this is Mafia 2, which is a unique case in that the 'cloth' (or what they call 'soft-body') physics calcs will always run on the CPU ... UNLESS you've got a 'dedicated' (used for only) physX card in your system, in which case they run on the dedicated GPU (unless you have physX 'off', which would make no sense if you have a dedicated card ).

The rigid-body physics calcs, like chunks falling off walls, however, will run on either CPU or GPU, depending on what you set physX to in the control panel ... logically, you'd want to use GPU as it's much faster.

SOOO ... in Mafia 2, a CPU OC will help w/the physX done on the CPU (cloth) ... unless you have a dedicated physX card, and have physX set to 'GPU', in which case you get all the physX on the GPU.

You follow all that?

Also @TestECull ... the only time having GPU physX enabled in NVCP does ANYthing, is when you play a GPU-physX game. So you're not wasting transistors by having it On, it just does nothing. OTOH, ATM you don't really have a fast enough card to use hardware physX anyway while gaming, so ... leaving it off for performance reason makes sense ... having physX on for something like Mafia 2 would instantly bring you down to single digits I'd guess.

Thread Starter
I think I did a cloth deletion on some of the models anyways on that game way only my characters cloth would move. Thats probably why I could play on physx on high with my cpu overclocked at 4.0ghz.
