I currently have a 6870, and I was planning on going CF sometime in the future. However, 3 6870's are around the same price as a 6990. I could sell my 6870 and get a 6990 or get 2 more 6870's and run in Tri-fire. If I do this, I will probably get 2 more monitors for a tri-monitor set-up as either of these is overkill for 1080p.

Which of these options will give me the best performance? Of course, either way I go my CPU will probably create a bottleneck, but I will try to get it to 4.0GHz+.

Also, another option could be 6970 x2, as that would also be the same price as a 6990 or 3 6870's.

Well then I guess it is 6970 x2 vs 6990... or I could go Nvidia but I don't know anything about their GPU's.

Nothing to know, basically same thing just green, heavy generalization lol. I would get a new chip and board or maybe wait for BD instead of getting a sli/cfx setup. You'll only end up being bottlenecked as it.

agreed, BD isnt to far round the corner (been saying that for a while now), see what its like and then decide wether or not to upgrade.

TBH, if you upgrade your cpu, mb and possibly ram, the money you get from selling them could be put towards another 6870.

You know, how long is a piece of string?

im running CF 6870, s and im smashing every game on full settings...

6970x2 2 gig memory or 4 depending in CF
6870x2 2 gig memory
6990x1 4 gig memory or 8 depending in CF

all great combos, every combo is going to have its benefits, but there all going to be very marginal..
