New Intel Build, advice wanted

Thread Starter
So, I'm looking to build a new rig, this dinosaur is starting to show it's age. Still runs pretty strong though -- can still run SC2 and LoL with decent framerates.

Here's my new build parts -- going to strip the GPU, optical drive, and HDD from the old rig until I can get the money to buy new ones.

Case:
LIAN LI PC-7B plus II Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Been eyeing this case for a while now -- it's between this one and the CM Centurion.

PSU:
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
Once I drop money on a new video card, I'll be needing it.

RAM:
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 2133

CPU:
Core i5-2500k
I heard it was better for gaming / non video-production use.

Mobo:
GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD4-B3 LGA 1155 Intel P67
Decided to go with the P67, since I don't need to encode video with Virtu (?), and I'm not sure that I'll need SSD caching. Heard this board is pretty good. Any thoughts? Not looking to spend $200+ on a board when there are some pretty good ones sub-$200.

Just looking for some suggestions. I'll be using my current keyboard, mouse, monitor, GPU, optical drive, and HDD from my previous rig.

Go ahead and poke fun at my old build. I still love my 939, and nothing'll change that ^_^

Thanks in advance!

I prefer CM cases over anything else. The centurion is a really nice case. The Lian Li case looks nicer but I think the centurion is the better case. Good CPU, mobo, and RAM. Build looks good.

Edit: Make sure your new mobo can support your old HDD. If it's IDE rather than SATA you might have an issue.

Are you going to CF/SLI once you get a new video card? If not, get a 500-600W PSU.

Case and RAM is fine. One is personal preference, the other is decent priced after code. Don't need that much speed though on a Sandybridge platform. OC ability relies mostly on the chip. Cheap DDR3 1333 or 1600 with a board with decent VRM phases will still OC a 2500K very well.

Unless you are planning SLI/Crossfire with highend cards like the Radeon 6950 and up or the GTX 570 and up, you don't need a 750W PSU. For a single card setup, there are MANY quality 500-600W PSU that will work just fine. Modular PSUs that are cheaper:

SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze 520W
SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W
SILVERSTONE ST60F-P 600W

I've heard nothing but good things about CM cases. I'll have to look closer. I'll probably go with the Lian Li though.

HDD is SATA, so no worries

I'm not sure. Not for the foreseeable future at least. Always a possibility though.

Yeah, I was going to go with DDR3 1600 RAM, until I saw my currently linked RAM at the price after codes and stuff.

I'll look at your linked PSUs.

Thanks for the link to the combo. Good deal

Thanks!

Decided to change the RAM. Here's the one I think I'll be going with.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

I've looked at different power supplies. Not really picky one way or the other about modularity. I can hide cables quite well (at least I have in my current case).
What about this PSU?

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-550VX 550W

Doesn't look too bad at all. About the same price as the 520W Seasonic.

I'll probably be ordering in a couple hours if there's no more advice.

As always, thanks!

That second RAM will be a better choice IMO. It is cheaper plus it is CAS 9 instead of 11.

I'd still totally go with the Seasonic unit. Better build, modular, and Bronze Certified on efficiency.

That Corsair unit is made by Channel Well...still decent, but the Seasonic is just better. Corsair's more higher end units are made by Seasonic as well like the TX650 v2 and HX650.

You don't need more than 500W for any single GPU right now with that setup.

I'd recommend getting the TX650 v2 or the Seasonic X650, just so you have room for SLI/crossfire in the future. A 520W PSU won't allow much room for two cards.
