What is the best GPU combo I can get for $700?

Thread Starter
Coming this Christmas, I will have the sum of $700. With this, I want to buy (a) new graphics card(s). My main two issues are cost and power consumption. I have an 850W power supply right now. The $700 budget isn't rock solid, so I would be able to go a little higher, but not much more than $750. Sound and heat aren't an issue for me at all. Any and all help would be appreciated.

PS. I'm thinking about getting two EVGA GTX 570s SC'd and SLI them at the moment.

You seem to be an Nvidia fan, my advice is AMD-centric, so yeah.

Anyways, if I were you, I might wait as the latest rumors say the 7000 series will be around before Christmas, so the GPU landscape could be radically changing soon.

Besides that, $700 would get you a 6990 fairly easily, a good choice if your looking at two GPUs. Unless you have two PCIe slots to spare, in that case two 6950's in Crossfire would be an excellent choice, especially if you can unlock them, and it would only cost about $600 for the 2 Gb versions, or $500 for the 1 Gb versions, enough money saved for a game or two, say Battlefield 3?

6950 flashed crossfire. Better than 570 SLI.

sli EVGA 570 vanillas, superclocks are just money wasted because you can get the clocks yourself.

If you went the ATI route, Go for Crossfire 6970.

BUT

by Christmas, the 7000 series ATI and possibly the 600 series nVidia cards should be available.

I don't really have a problem with either ATI or Nvidia, I just want the best price/performanace ratio. Do you think it would be better to get a 600/7000 series card or buy the 500/6000 cards at a price reduction. Also, does anyone have any idea as to how much those cards will drop in price with the introduction of the new series cards?

No idea on price whatsoever. I'll take an educated guess and say the prices will be about what they are right now between the ATI 5000 and 6000 series and even the nVidia 400 and 500 series.

Two 6950's will run anything you need unless you plan on quad boxing Crysis. : Under $500 for two cards new. If you go the open box route (I did), you are looking under $400 for both. 1gb versions should be fine unless you run over 1080p. If so, then you'll notice a difference with the 2gb cards. For a little less, two 560ti's are still great cards. I have no preference either as far as brands go, I just think the 6950 is the best bang-for-the-buck card at the middle-top end. 560ti's are going for $190 shipped (open box) every week on Newegg. The 6950's (open box) have been under $200 each.

Note: If you are set on spending $750 I would go with the 6970's without a doubt. The power supply you have should be fine. That would be my route if I were set on spending that much. I say save a little, pick up two 6950's and use the rest elsewhere.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I suppose I'll come back and post this same thread in six months, haha.

Stop recommending 6950 unlocked cards, cuz they are VERY hard to come by since AMD stopped that business.

Impossible to say; you should wait until you actually have the money before planning on a purchase. The hardware world changes drastically fast.
