New set of cans

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I'm looking for a new set of headphones to replace my now aged Beyerdynamic DT770's, which I absolutely loved for the solid bass and the good sound quality. Unfortunately they've been subjected to 4 years of continuous gaming, so they're now going to the girlfriend in exchange for the 'green light' to purchase a new-to-me set of headphones.

My current budget is right at 300$, plus or minus a couple of bucks. I've been looking at some used Sennheiser HD 650's on Amazon, but don't really have anything set in stone yet. My sound card needs upgrading as well here in the near future, it's only an X-Fi xtremegamer, and I'll probably be looking at getting a desktop amp as well if the improvement in quality warrants it?

Any advice/tips/links/directions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The 650s would be great, but you'd definitely want an amp for them.

music taste?

my music taste usually falls in the R&B, hip hop, rap, modern rock and some techno category, which is why I liked the bass from the DT770's.

Just out of curiosity, is there a significant difference between the 650's and the 600's? I'm not opposed to ponying up extra cash to buy the better item the first time, as it saves me from buyer's remorse.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Neither the HD650 or HD600 suit your music needs honestly. You might want to look into a Denon or Ultrasone.

akg 702's will be really good for that price range, might not be enough punch though since they are open.

While the HD650's are amazing headphones, they are best suited to classical music and have a high impedance of 300 ohms which will require very expensive amplification to get the most out of them (A few hundred dollars at least). You should look into the Denon AH-D2000's, which are better for the type of music you listen to and do not require a lot of amplification due to their low impedance (25 ohms). However a decent amp will still marginally improve their sound quality.

well after a ton of review reading and poking around on here, I pulled the trigger on a set of Denon AH-D2000's. Thanks to everyone who chimed in, you guys are awesome as always.
