GTX460 not fully used? Bottleneck? Or 2nd monitor? - Page 2

Even at 60fps, GTA4 runs like a rusty knife through steel wool for me. FRAPS registers a playable framerate, but in-game, there is stuttering everywhere. Play the game, not the benchmark, see what the experience is like.

running an older cpu held me back as well, w 1 gtx460 and my 5000+ i had to clock the 460 to 925core, 2210mem to make certain games playable.

BFBC2 is a game that can make actual use of a quad (meaning you can actually get a quad to load to 100% overall, which is pretty rare even still). As such, even a nice dualie that's adequate for virtually everything else ... can struggle on this game.

Aside from your source games, everything you have is pretty CPU-heavy, relatively speaking, but I'd think only BC2 would give you an actual noticeable BN while playing.

W/the Sandy coming in a month, this problem will be gone. Till then, well ... small compromises may (very) rarely be in order, but overall that CPU is 'good enough' for a 460, about 99% of the time, esp. with decently high settings.

Techspot tested CPU scaling on BC2. With an i7 920 at stock 2.66GHz (with 2 cores and HT disabled - simulating a dual core CPU) at 1680x1050, they got 74fps (vs your 40-60 fps). But this 74 figure came at only High Quality/2xAA/4xAF while you have Highest Quality/32xAA/16xAF.
So,I think your CPU is just getting it right without a bottleneck.

With 2 cores disabled, the 2 remaining cores work at about 75%. When all 4 cores enabled, each works at around 33%.
So, their conclusion is that while BC2 could utilize a quad core CPU, ''a decent dual core processor such as a Core 2 Duo E8xxx or Phenom II X2 should be enough to get the most out of your graphics card in this game.''
(they used a HD5870)

I hope this gives you a little peace of mind.

Afterburner says I'm getting a little more GPU usage, around 60-75%. Memory usage at most was 811mb.

Does this seem normal? Am I seeing a slight bottleneck? I'm getting an i5-2500k a month from now so I'm guessing a GTX460 would run better with it?

Edit: What other games should I try? Right now I have BC2, Crysis/Warhead, GTAIV, HL2 Cinematic Mod, and Portal 2 installed in terms of "demanding" or modern games.
We can rule out BC2 and GTA IV. Neither is going to run well on a dual core. The source engine games (HL2 and Portal 2) should both run well enough. Your dual core is still going to hold you back slightly on Portal 2 though (my i5 see's about 85% load on Portal 2).

You said you're upgrading to an i5 2500k soon. Trust me, it'll be a night and day difference in almost every game you listed.

Yeah I've been playing more BC2 today and no matter what settings I chose I get the same framerate. Always around 30-40, sometimes dipping to the 20's or hitting the 50's.

Looks like there's nothing I can do but wait til I order my new hardware. And I can't even play BF2 without PunkBuster thinking I'm trying to hack the Pentagon

It might not be a bottleneck.

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/7883...usage-bad.html

That sounds almost exactly what I go through playing BC2. I just tried Portal 2 maxed out and it ran at nearly 200fps with 90%+ usage.

Just installed my i5, and now I'm getting 99% usage in BC2. Guess it was a bottleneck

Cool deal, T.

See, sometimes we actually get it right here on OCN

Enjoy your new rig man!

i had the similar problem while i was using an x2 555 but it was solved with x4 955
you are not alone in this case, people in ea forums have been discussing on the same problem since last year. Here is a guy says the same

''90% cpu usage with E8500 @ 4.1 Ghz ''

Another guy using e7300@2.66 Ghz says ''CPU usage is at 97-98% on both cores. this is with Windows XP Pro 32-bit ''

i guess you shouldnt worry. it looks like a bottleneck
