$150 headphone recommendation - Page 4

How so?

Burn in is the physical process in which the diaphragms loosen up through use and eventually reach a point that could be considered final. A similar situation is breaking in a new pair of shoes. If diaphragms are limited in physical range when new, that affects the entire overall sound that the user experiences. With that said, in the future please post something more informative than "Your idea of ... is a joke".

Your idea is not his idea.

Please describe his idea? I guess I'm not familiar with exactly how higgins decides to burn in his cans... But as Doogiehouser said, burn in is indeed a real thing that should be taken into consideration.

Don't remember describing my method of burning in my AD700s in my post. I played oscillating brown noise slightly louder than i would have listened to music for 72 hours before putting them on my head, after which i simply listened to them and let them further loosen up on their own.

Wasn't trying to imply that it took a year to burn them in, but they nonetheless sound very different than when i first got them.

Deciding that you don't like a set of headphones after less than a day and sending them back simply doesn't work when dealing at this level (even if the AD700s are low-mid range cans). You'll be judging the stiff diaphragms which are not an accurate depiction of what the set was intended to nor eventually sound like.

I understand giving it only a day is too quick to judge it but I was already on the fence with these. I ordered them because they had qualities that I liked and despite what some people were saying I thought I would give them a shot and considering it wont cost me anything to return I figured why not. I am confident even with burn in these phones just don't have the sound I'm looking for. Oh well, time to try again.

So, what would it cost me to get a high-mid range pair? And what sound card would you recommend?

You could look into closed back phones to give you more bass that you're looking for. The Audio Technica M50s are highly recommended on OCN, but i haven't looked into cans with lots of bass so i would be of no help there.

Does the $150 include the sound card? I would recommend a Xonar or an X-Fi if all you do is game. Going from my X-Fi Platinum to my Xonar Essence was very noticeable, but the Xonar is apparently not as good at game audio positioning (I haven't noticed it).

The essence is amazing with gaming audio, I haven't tried Creative so I can't speak for them, but I don't see how it could get any better than the essence.

It does sounds phenomenal, but that's only what i've heard when comparing the Xonar vs X-Fi. Didn't have my AD700s when i used the X-Fi so i don't have a first hand comparison, but the Essence sounds amazing.

Mechanical burn-in is real however it is heavily overstated.

Moi post about it with relevant links.

Have you considered the A700s or A900s? Should have similar comfort to the AD700s and will certainly have more bass. I wish I had gone with the A700s instead of my AD700s.
