I looked up your hardware and it should run any Linux you want and at considerable improvement over Vista. However you do have your work cut out for you because it has an older ATi video chip and they are not well supported in accelerated mode. You may have to use VESA mode but on a 14" screen that's not too bad.

The most important thing you need to do with LiveCDs, whether on CD or USB (besides checking md5 checksum of your download), is to try/use the "acpi=off" option. Older bioses were "hinky" when it came to power management.

BTW if you're newly from Windows I highly recommend finding a copy of Slack-Remix, anything from v8 thru v10. The reason is that it comes with numerous graphix and Desktop options and is pre-loaded with Flash on Firefox and really sweet graphics effects that don't overload older systems.

Here's a sample [IMG][/IMG]

Don't let looks fool you, almost any Linux OS can run the KDE desktop. Looking, acting, and being exactly what YOU want it to be is what makes Linux great. Try Mint with KDE, and by default it looks nearly identical to that Slackware pic. KDE 3 that is... I use KDE 4 on one of my Fedora installs just because it looks better IMHO. I'd try continuing your Mint install with LXDE before bothering with any different DE.

Same speed. Mint 10 is based on Ubuntu 10.10 I believe, which would mean less bugs, but Ubuntu will continue to update 11.04 and make it better. LXDE version should make it really good, as the standard version is using Unity, and unity is junk.

I suppose I should have included the boot screen so you could see that Slax-Remix (now Porteus) comes with LXDE as well as many other really cool options. Additionally, while it is already capable of persistence, if you want to install it to USB or even hdd, there is a simple script, "makeboot.sh" or "makeboot.bat" to do it from a windoze system, that does all that w/o the tedium of other 3rd party applications.

Here's an old boot screen from v.8

Copy to Ram mode is pretty slick. I've used that mode with SLAX for years. Cool stuff, but installing it (frugal?) is really not reccomended. SLAX is the best travel OS I've ever seen.
