6950 vs gtx 560 ti

Thread Starter
The last ATI product I owned was a 9800XT with 256mb!
Looking to come back if it's worth it..
The prices are slightly more favorable to the gtx 560 Ti, and most of the reviews I've seen say these two cards are pretty much equal (50%~ give ATI the win 50%~ give Nvidia the win.)

What do you guys think?

if you intend to only game, it does not really matter wich you choose. they will as you say, performe quite equal.

if you intend to do bitcoin mining, or other OpenCL based tasks, I'd go with the ATI card.

the 6950 can be flashed to 6970 as well if i'm not mistaken?

the 2gb models can be, but it voids the warranty and if u have to send it in for RMA they will deny it.

I would get the gtx 560ti only if its within 20 bucks of the 6950,anymore I would just get the 6950.

I think so too but I believe that in order for the 6950 to be flashed.. it has to be one of those 6950 stock pcbs/ vanilla design.. or some special ones..

Someone has to confirm this.

I'd personally try NV this time.. then again that's only because I have a 16:9 monitor.. AMD has issues with my monitor.. can't play games under 1920x1080 and in a 16:9 aspect ratio, full screen while having default amazing image quality..

You get black bars and crappy colors on 90% of games I tried

(Crysis, Crysis 2, warhead, Assassin's creed, brotherthood, metro.. you name it).

Happens with my intel rig and AMD rig and my 4870 and 5870.. so it's either the Samsung 2333HD or AMD's Drivers..

I am guessing the latter.. as this was NOT an issue with a GTX 275.

With all due respect I'm wondering how you can void the warranty by flashing a new BIOS to your card? If it does no damage, and you flash it back to original, surely there's no way to tell? Understandably if it does do damage, however - then it's pretty obvious you would void it.

To the OP - if you do get the 6950s, don't flash a 6970 BIOS to it, the more aggressive memory clocks are damaging some cards. The best way to go is a modified 6950 BIOS with the shader unlocks and then a regular overclock to 6970 speeds. Much safer.

If it goes out for good and there is no way to reflash then what?

Better just to keep it with the normal bios until your out of warranty, then its fine to grow a pair and do what you wish.

even unlocked we are talking about 2-3 frames difference, it aint worth it in my opinion.

The reason I asked is because they have a dual BIOS switch, one of which is read-only. So for instance some people are having issues where their 6950 won't POST after having a full 6970 BIOS flashed to it, but are able to power down the PC, flip the BIOS back to the original to boot the system, then flip it back to the 6970 BIOS while in windows and flash it back to standard.

However I do agree that the gains are very minimal and not particularly worth it (hence why I haven't bothered to flash my 6950).

Meh. I RMA'ed one of several that I have flashed and didn't have a problem. I don't know where people get the proof for your claim, but I haven't seen it.

? I doubt you have any. OP there is no proof the timings are tighter. If someone does have possession of some I will gladly rescind that statement. I doubt anyone does. Smo is just posting what he has heard elsewhere, but no one has proved it yet to my knowledge. As for the flash or unlocking the shaders, odds are you won't be able to do so anyways. Apparently all the new cards are laser cut or a modified PCB so it's a no go. If you do stumble across a 6950 that will, go for it. Just remember that when modifying any hardware, whether it's a motherboard bios or a CPU overclock you take a risk. That being said, it's a very mild risk. Feel free to check out the guide in my sig. All this crap has been discussed there and a hundred other places on this forum.

In regards to your question: go either way as it doesn't matter. A 560 ti and a HD 6950 will score within a few FPS of each other at 1080. At slightly higher resolutions I would argue the 6950 pulls ahead of the 560 ti (even the 2 GB model) due to a different architecture. Also, the 6950's individually support eyefinity setups. You need to go SLI for surround. Again thoughm the 560 ti is no slouch and is (with reference coolers) cooler and thus quieter than the 6950, though IIRC it uses more power.

As you can see it's just a series of trade offs. Depending on your interests, you can go either way. Good luck!

not this.

lol my 560 Ti is super impressive... i love it.

there are also 2 GB models out which would be better if you are at 1900x1200 resolution or anything above 1080p. at 1080p im pretty sure that the core and the vram will have similar limitations, so it wont be like you are running out of vram before power.
