This will be my first mini atx/itx build and I am looking for guidance. The idea behind this is to have something I can bring to friends houses easily to play games on on occasion. It is. Not meant to be a power house! I am using some parts I already have for the most part.

I want to rip out my Q6600 from my dell xps420. That will be the only thing salvaged from that thing except for the dvd drive. I have two 5770 reference cards, crossfire would be nice, but I will be happy with just one. A wifi card (pci 1x). A corsair H50. And a generic 450w psu that I got laying around.

Now, I am not sure what kind of case can fit what I want. Aesthetically, I want a case tat has the cube look (think TT lanbox lite as an idea). But like I said, I dont know what will fit and rather have some input from the experts. Originally was thinking ITX but was becomming more exensive than what I wanted.

Price wise. Reasonable and cheap. This is not meant to be top of the line by any means. That is what my sig rig is for....although, I wont lie, I was thinking of a cpu and gpu water loop lol (cmon! This is OCN!). But Id want to keep it single 120mm rad, not sure how well that would work...

I plan on getting new RAM, not sure how much though. Prob 6 or 8. And would prefer DDR3. Would my 450w psu be able to power this easily? Or should I upgrade and get modular to save space.

Like I said, this will not be a powerhouse pc. It will be hooked up to my spare monitor (22" 1050). But eventually used as a media pc down the road hooked up to my tv for movies. I will be throwing in my 30gb ssd as a boot drive, and a 1tb hdd for storage (movies, games, FLAC).

EDIT: and I dont know about the motherboard, I am an Asus fanboy, but I have heard good things about msi and gigabyte.

Recommendations please!

I was actually looking at that same one. But I was reading some reviews saying there were some clearance issues with video cards (primarily a 5770 which I planned on using).

you know what, here's an even better suggestion

CASM-CMNP-DV21M-BS-2.jpg

http://3btech.net/blchfcsmfoal.html

$60 with free shipping

it'll easily handle 2 5770's, though handling the heat would be another issue. I'd recommend a reference card that would exhaust the hot air outside the case.

Here's one of my builds with a clone of that case:

I had bought one of these a while back, and it had some issues. It uses a touch panel to power it on, and sometimes it just stops working for a bit. Still senses the touch and reacts to it, but won't switch on the PC. Really annoying.

The touch panel also makes loud beeps, which is also annoying.

So I slapped my build together yesterday. Had to do some modding in order to mount my H50 and give the rad some decent airflow inside the case. I then ran into the problem that I couldn't even mount an optical drive. Not a huge deal, but it requires me to go out and buy an external optical drive now. But the one thing that is bugging me is the fact that the 5.25" bay covers that come with the case are flimsy as all hell! So to remedy that, I'm going to do a little bit more "modding". And by that, I mean I will cut up some plexiglass and mount it so I can replace the bay covers with it. Maybe put in some LEDs as well to make things look a little more interesting. I will post pics when I'm done.

So far though, Its very nice. Was a huge pain to get everything installed since I'm used to a full tower. But it is running VERY quite, which was my goal. OC'd my Q6600 to 3ghz, haven't checked the temps yet, but I'm confident they are just fine. I will post pics when its completed.

Ok, so here are some pictures of my build.

First up. All my ingredients. Q6600 and 430W TT psu and a 500gb HDD that I will be using is in the Dell. MSI G41MT mATX mobo. XMS 1333 2gb x2 RAM. 500gb HDD. H50, my first Lian Li case, Asus wireless N card, and one of my sapphire 5770's I got laying around.
dsc0020qx.jpg

Ewwww....
dsc0024nz.jpg

Mobo is stuck in.
dsc0033nve.jpg

Did some cutting to mount the H50 and give it some airflow.
dsc0038lc.jpg

Installing the OS. Couldn't mount the optical due to space restriction in the 5.25 bays because of the H50.
dsc0044kv.jpg

Here are the guts.
dsc0050pb.jpg

Installed plexiglass in the drive bays since the provided covers are horrible and don't stay.
dsc0045wc.jpg
dsc0046chn.jpg

There you have it. Turned out pretty good. Runs very quiet. Still getting everything setup in Ubuntu since I am new with it. But of course, it will never replace my sig rig biggrin.gif

**UPDATE**

So this little fella is going to be watercooled!!

First off, parts:
Bistpower Compression Fittings 3/8" ID
90degree silver fittings
Black Ice GTX Xtreme dual 92mm Rad
XSPC X20 450 Pump/Res
Swiftech Apogee LP High Perfomance CPU Waterblock (waiting on backplate from swiftech currently)
Feser Light blue 3/8" ID tubing
BGears B-blaster 92mmx25mm fans

I will be replacing the side panels with acryllic and considering mounting some LEDs. I will be getting a new PSU in the near future/later this month and sleeving it with blue paracord. I may attempt to etch/paint the acryllic as well for some added "BAM!".

Note, a watercooled 580 will be dropped into this creature once the Kepler GPUs are out and I upgrade my sig rig (yes, the DCII is getting watercooled next week! lol).

Before I decided to rip out the 5.25 bay holder, was going to mount it like I had the H50.

So after I posted this, I went and checked the mail...

Not only did I get the LGA 775 backplate I needed from Swiftech (they two dayed it..very impressive!), but I also go a Jury Duty summons =\. So, To get my mind off the slight amount of depression that I felt for this, I decided to go ahead and work some more on putting together the rig.

dsc0148vk.jpg
dsc0149pu.jpg
dsc0150mb.jpg

Had to adjust the angles of the fittings here, may decide to use a 90 degree bit instead of the 45 degree in the future.
dsc0151hi.jpg

Cable management is almost non existant, this is why I need a modular PSU =\. Ill do more work on it tomorrow.
