Science should be working on actual problems and not BS like this.
You know what would be amazing? If scientists used their funding for projects that would advance our technology greatly, like Intel did with their 3d transistors, instead of "Oh let's make a pool playing robot, that doesnt absolutely nothing to impact scientific studies, just cause we can".
It's these apparently impractical ideas that open doors to new ideas, methods and technology, doing an unimportant task efficiently is more important than doing an important task inefficiently.
That said, it doesn't mean they were trying to be practical, they probably just thought it'd be fun. Scientists do stuff for fun too, remember. They don't have to be working 24/7 on the cure for Cancer or AIDS, or working on cyborgs.
