USB errors on HP dv6

Thread Starter
Basically, when I plug devices in, one of 3 things could happen

1. USB Device has Malfunctioned
2. This USB device could perform faster on a USB 2.0 port
3. Works fine

Error can happen on any of the 3 USB ports or the eSATA/USB combo port, with any device

So far the devices affected by this include a 16GB iPod touch and an 8GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade.

Any ideas? Specs are under "Thats What You Get" in my sig.

When you say the devices are affected, do they still work on other computers?

Do you happen to have integrated nVidia graphics? (eg. GeForce Go) and do you have wireless issues? I wonder if your issue is related to the so-called nVidia defect that affected certain HP models, including the dv6.

I'm inclined to agree with greyfox's assessment. You might be looking at needing a chipset reflow or reball. The next most likely cause would be improper voltage management. If you know your way around a multimeter you could start checking to see if there are any mosfets or capacitors near the usb ports that have blown.

Everything you need to know about the Voltage Regulator Circuit

It's integrated ATI HD 4530, with an AMD Athlon X2 QL-65, so I don't think it's that. Wifi is fine.

iPod is not tested on other PCs, USB stick did come up with one "Runs quicker on USB 2.0" message on my sigrig but the front USB ports on there are defective anyway. It's been fine on 3 other Win 7 rigs, 2 other XP ones, and a Vista one.

iPod has been connected for hours just fine.

If the mosfets or caps had gone, would it not have taken out all the USBs, completely?

Sadly this isn't a laptop I can dismantle as it is under a cover plan. So I can't do a reflow or multimeter reading.

if the mosfets or caps blew completely yeah they probably would have stopped working entirely. it sounds to me like you're getting varied or improper voltage which can be caused by faulty caps or mosfets if they're having issues but not completely toasted

Sadly its not something I can test. Most of the time, it's fine, it's just occasionally.

Just now I plugged in a 2GB Cruzer Blade. First time, it said it needed formatting.

So I re-plugged it in, and it works fine. Then I plugged my 2GB Cruzer Micro in that same port. Fine. (I own about 5 SanDisk Cruzer USB sticks)

8GB Cruzer Blade into the eSATA/USB combo port. Fine.

Bootable 2GB Cruzer Blade - fine.

So it's highly unusual whatever it is. If they die completely I can just send it in for repair.

Right, I've just had a c5 BSOD, BlueScreenViewer says the fault lies with ntkrnlpa.exe
Had one 3 weeks ago too, but that time the fault was with ndis.sys.

Related to the issues, maybe?
