General Question

Thread Starter
Over the past two days, I've built my sig rig and installed my OS, drivers, and just a few programs (i.e. avira, some program suites from my driver discs). Before I go any further with loading stuff on, my question is, are there any programs in particular you guys load onto a newly built computer and run for any reason (i.e. stress testing, optimization) before you get into the meat of personal data addition? I'm sorry if the question seems a bit vague, but I just want to make sure I get the most out of my investment and to avoid getting bitten in the ass later by something I could have done now. Thanks.

Personally I like to disable a few unneeded Windows features (eg. Windows Search) and msconfig unneeded programs.

These programs will be useful:
  • Fraps - monitoring performance in games
  • CPU-Z - CPU Z will tell you the model, code name, process, core voltage, stepping and revision number as well as the core speed, FSB and multiplier the PC is running. You can also find out what speed your DRAM is running at
  • this handy utility will tell you the clocks, the card revision, the number of transistors on the card as well as the process technology used to build the card.
  • VLC - can play pretty much any video file
  • Speedfan - gives you access to all of that information by tapping into the numerous digital temperature sensors of important parts like your CPU and GPU. Also allows you to adjust fan speeds which can reduce noise.
  • Picasa - useful for managing photos
