The card doesn't seem like a worthwile upgrade IMO. IIRC, the 460 is locked to 2-way sli, so you don't have any upgrade option whereas you could tri/quadfire those 6950s if you ever wanted to, or do a 6990/6950 trifire..

I don't know off the top of my head, but if the card is 2 full fledged 460 gpus, then it will surely outperform the 6950, but the 6950 runs for around 270.. lol.

if folding is a primary concern, why not get 2 560tis? after rebate you'll have spent around 400 if you buy evga, and you'll get over gtx 580 performance and great folding capability!

edit: didn't read that you're going nvidia. Regardless, I would say the card isn't worth it. 2x 560ti will run you like 50-60 more before rebate and after it's almost the same in price, but in performance it's waaaay ahead. 560tis can't do tri/quad sli either though.. :s

also, is vram an issue? if not NBD but if you need the 2gb of 6950 vram, going down to 1gb may hurt high res gaming if you're above 1080p
You can Quad-SLi the 2Wins.

I much prefer a single GPU card, as I dont have to deal with all that BS.

So if im aiming for a single GPU card, I dont want to lose any performance going from a 6950 2Gb. Already my 6950 has problems running some games at max settings. I want full eyecandy. The only games my current GPU drops below 60 fps in is crysis series, and metro 2033. So going to a Nvidia card I want to at least match the performance if not get a little better. Also, I would like that to be in one card to leave open the option of going SLI in future games(BF3). My mobo I have coming Monday only supports 2 gpu slots.

I thought the 560ti was way worse than a single 6950, I thought the 6950 cause it can unlock to a 6970 matches the 570.

Unlocking a 6950 isn't guaranteed to work and it still won't clock as well as 6970's do.

It's pretty much impossible to get 60fps in Metro 2033, even tri-sli 580's will get beaten down as soon as Depth of Field gets enabled. You should be looking for 60fps out of Crysis and 30fps out of Metro 2033, and only a single GTX 580 can do that... In fact with Metro 2033, you'll still be limited since 4xMSAA will kill a 580 and so will DoF. So really, Metro is a really hard game to max.

You want max? Go with a GTX 580 and SLI it up later if you aren't satisfied. But yes, a HD 6970 gets the same performance as the GTX 570... They should be fine for BF3. Maxing games is not that hard if you desire 30fps or more.. It gets really hard when you want 60fps and that usually requires SLI.

Incorrect, I use to have two 6950's in Xfire and I was seeing minimum 70FPS in metro 2033. Right now on just one 6950 its between 25-35 fps with DoF on.

GTX 580 is a solid card except just a little out of my price range. Right now Im considering the 560ti or the 570 maybe even the 480 just don't know about going last gen though.

How is that possible?

the GF104 GPU is physically incapable of more than 2way sli.

It doesn't matter that it has a SLI finger.

Here at the end of this unboxing you hear this mentioned as well.. that the sli finger was a mistake.

The 560ti even beats out a 6970 in some regards. you would not see much of a difference if you bought a 560ti.

If you want to be completely sure you don't lose any performance, grab a 570 twin frozr III and sli that later on or something, those cards are monsters and they OC like crazy.

no you cant. the sli finger was a design mistake that they couldnt change before manufacturing.

OP: if you have the room, get 2 separate 460s. its much better than having it on one pcb. cooler, probably better ocing, and much cheaper.

2 460s will beat a 580. plus theyre really easy to oc. you might really see a 20% increase when theyre at near 900mhz

Go with the GTX 570 then... I just don't see how you could get 30fps with a 6950 playing with DoF and tessellation on, unless your monitor resolution is less than 1920x1200.

The GTX 480 is cheaper and it has the same performance as the GTX 570, but it uses more energy and runs hotter/louder.

6970/570/480 are pretty much your choices. Going with a 560 Ti would just be a sidegrade and would be useless.
