E8400 running hot - Page 2

Used to have this cooler on a Q9400@3.8... ran cooler then any temps you had definitely clear the old paste off and reapply some good paste.

I load at 45c with my E3400@3.51Ghz at 1.26v, keep in mind it only pulls around 95w at that speed, and is 45nm. The only difference between our HSF's is that mine is plated and has a nickel base, It's a good HSF but not a superb one.

The CPU cooler isn't the best by far... Those temps from what I remember back in the day weren't bad for that cooler.

Is that a C0 stepping Core 2 Duo E8400? They were known to have flaky sensors more often than not. Although, by 70C+, the inaccuracy issues and such shouldn't apply.

How are you finding out how much just the CPU loads at wattage-wise?
Thats normal, I know cause I have a E8400 and a zalman 9700 at 3.8ghz. Its safe to, those programs really heat up your chip. You would have to be gaming for hours to come close to those temps.

70C is pretty hot for an E8400 IMO and P95 generates less heat than most other torture tests.

That Zalman cooler you're using is also a moderate level cooler, but until you're past 4.0GHz, E8400s run very very cool. You should re-seat and check that you put things together right, and be sure you're using a thin but even coat of good paste.

If you're still running hot, post a pic of your case with the side door off, showing air flow. If the flow is good, maybe think about something like a Hyper 212+, Mugen II or similar tower or H5O-ish cooler.

Its an E0 one. I'll probably get a better cooler for the i5, something like a Hyper 212

Seems super hot to me even if the cooler isn't the best of the best.
I had a similar problem with mine and realized one push-pin on my HS popped out because it wasn't locked correctly. It still wasn't that hot though ^_-

No way around it, seems you might have to slap on some new TP and re-seat the HS :/

I have a CO and it still runs cooler on higher volts. I've never used that cooler before, so i can't say regarding that.

So today I got bored and disassembled my PC to figure out what was wrong. My 9500A cooler was full of dust, so I went ahead and took and air can and some q-tips to it. Cleaned the old thermal paste off the cooler/CPU and re-seated it.

For airflow, I removed the IDE cable that used to run through my case to my DVD drive. I know, IDE sucks but I ordered it by mistake instead of SATA. I only use the disc drive to install Windows, so I think I can leave it disabled for awhile.

The result? Lower temps! I'm now idling at about 36 degrees. Hopefully my load temps are a lot lower...I hate seeing 70+ degrees

Wow, been running Prime95 blend test for about 45 minutes and the highest its gone is 62/58 degrees. A full 10 degrees lower than before. Might get my OC back up to 4.05ghz and seen if I can run BC2 smoothly again
