What about getting a cheap DAC in place of a sound card? Would that benefit the OP at all? I know next to nothing about DACs so maybe can enlighten us and the OP a little bit to help him out.

It's a couple bucks over the price range, and its used, but its 32 Ohm. I've heard that they are still harder to drive than other headphones due to the sensitivity though.

That said, it's also the Premium version instead of the Pro. The difference (other than price) is the clamping force: the Pros have a tighter clamping force than the Premiums. I had a pair of DT770 Pros from Guitar Center a few years back and wearing them felt like putting my head into a vice. I couldn't wear them for more than 15 minutes without getting a headache. I can't guarantee that the 990 Premiums are better, but they should be.

Would the FiiO E7 essentially replace my need for a sound card if I just used it through USB with a Ultrasone PRO 550?

You know... kill two birds with one stone.

yea, you just plug the E7 into your USB port and you plug your headphones into it if you don't have a separate amp.

I don't get this analogy at all
maybe this would be better. Is there a difference between a $20 graphics card and a $170 graphics card? Yes, but depending on how you use it and what your standards are, it might not matter to you.

How does the quality of the E7 compare with traditional sound cards? Also would it affect positional audio or certain technologies that bring out the audio in gaming?

Edit: I googled a bit and came to the conclusion that a E7 would be on par when it comes to music but gaming would be better with a sound card because it supports EAX etc.

I still think I'm going to get the E7. I just hope it doesn't hurt me too bad in the long run playing Battlefield 3 because DICE is sort of known for making good audio.

Well you won't get to use features like Dolby Headphone or virtual "surround", but for straight stereo listening it should be perfectly fine. I don't have much experience with USB DACs or how they affect positioning, so I'll wait for someone knowledgeable to add.

I'm perfectly fine playing games using a USB DAC. I don't really like how "virtual surround" sounds anyways

I don't use just a DAC for sound, but I agree that the virtual surround BS on many cards doesn't sound very good nor does it provide any real advantage while gaming.
