1156 sockets and your CPU may be EOL, but will be viable for the next five years at least.

@ Deathclaw, whatever you have to say please say it ...I'm so new to this that sometimes I dont even know the right questions to ask. I'm open and learn fast. As far as OC my 5850, I'm assuming I need an a cooling system as well, my card runs now at about 45 idle, 60 C under load. I honestly just want to be able to max out Battlefield 3 for now, and sometime in the future invest in a self built better future proof PC.

no, stock cooling is perfectly suitable for overclocking graphic cards, the cpu's really need aftermarket cooling, but gpu cooling solutions are quality made
my 5850 has approximately the same temps as yours during these hot days and it's fan goes only up to 28%, so i assume yours probably does too.

to check your gpu temperatures, fan speed, and clocks of graphics processor and shaders (and overclocking tool) instal msi afterburner, it's good program with good interface

Shortly - NO

The same hard drive with allready installed windows will work with new motherboard and you do not need to reinstall windows.
Other option is that you can reinstall windows, but you will need to contact microsoft for reuse of the serial key

OK, cool. I'll download MSI Afterburner now. Any help and/or links to helping flash my 5850 would be greatly appreciated. This would be my first go at it and dont want to burn my card out

Good to know

which model 5850 is it?
i mean do you know if it is sapphire or some other manufacturer or anything else about the card?

detailed guide for overclocking ati cards can be found here
http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/633...r-ati-gpu.html
if it seems too complex to you i can simplify it for you

download for msi afterburner here:
http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

edit:
if it is reference you can check this thread it show you how to recognise reference card from non reference
http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/705...ence-card.html
reference cards could be flashed to support overvolting for even more overclock

Only info i have on it is... ATI Radeon HD 5850 1 GB so im not sure. It just looks like the generic 5850 card with the ATI stamp
post #19 of 42
There is nothing wrong with a 5850 as long as the price is right. It is still a good card. There will always be an upgrade.

How much is hte whole system costing and what are the upgrade options/ prices?

I'll have to open the case and check again to see if its a reference card and get back at you(thanks for all the info by the way, I know you don't have to help me so i really do appreciate you taking time out of your day, thanks)
