Question.

Yeah, I'm pretty much clueless on all of this. I'm hoping of getting a better understanding of it by asking this hypothetical question. Two cpus, the first one being A, has a single processor with a clock speed of 3.0GHz for example. And the second processor, B, is a dual processor which has 2.0GHz for clock speed. If every other determining factor which I don't know about are the same, which one would be better? A or B?

B for certain. It would be faster due to both its architecture and also having 2 cores instead of 1. Plus, it should have a larger L2 cache.

My mom had a laptop with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 with HyperThreading, and I had an E2180 at stock which is 2.0 GHz. Even back then, my system felt significantly faster than hers.

It gets weird though when comparing say the Intel 2500k 6mb L3 Cache 3.3GHZ Quad Core (4cores+4virtual Cores-Effectively 8 Cores) VS. say an AMD PII X4 965 3.4Ghz with 6Mb L3 Cache. The Intel is effectively 2 generations of architecture ahead and their utilization of the virtual cores is proving to be very effective in the processor battle. A slower intel i5 or i7 will stomp a mud hole in the current offerings from AMD.

Or does it work in some other way?

Therefore, the architecture is almost the biggest determining factor.

Nah. It's just similar to comparing a job being done by 1 person as opposed to 2, 4, or even 8. However, the architecture (how organized and efficient these workers are) is almost more important than the number of cores. Almost.
