Why get an SSD

Thread Starter

I'm thinking about getting one but when i look at vidoes on youtube all i see is you can boot up in 10secs or open up 100 apps with ease.

My boot time is ok and i dont open 100 apps at once yeah i know it's showing me the speed but when i open office it takes 2 seconds and other things like documents etc the only thing that takes time is Power Director 16 seconds lol.

They reason why I'm asking is because I'm hearing a lot about ssd lately about how great they are. So i looked up about them and thought for 200 odd for a few seconds faster was madness unless you need it for after effects or something like that.I'm hoping someone here could explain why they are good basically looking for convincing lol i have the cash but so far i don't see why.

WITHOUT SSD

Thanks.

It's true once you have used one,you won't ever want a spinner again. It is worth the cost for the overall speed boost.Believe me even if it is only a few seconds, they add up.

I have a samsung 470 which is somewhat slower now by todays ssd standards, but coming from raid 0 raptors before I can honestly say that there is some improvement but I did not get the wow factor that many on here talk about

Despite the similar data transfer rates, the raptors in RAID 0 aren't going to come remotely close with access times.
Had 2x Velociraptors short-stroked and even then I was only getting 5.5ms access times as opposed to the ~0.1ms response of my SSD.

As everyone said, there is a difference in system performance when running a SSD. I have ran Raptors in Raid0 and a Single SSD killed them in access time along with boot time.

I am currently running 2 MCG2 SSD's in Raid0 and will not go back to Mech drive as an OS. My HTPC is a stripped down version of windows it it still takes twice as long even running Raid0 with 2 7200rpm drives.

Boot times and game load times are the most noticeable. Big programs like Photoshop, Office (in my case Libre Office) and such will benefit too. I honestly don't feel my SSD in my day to day work (I just stalk OCN most of the time), but I no longer hate rebooting cause everything loads instantly. I do think that I'd be sad if I had to go back to something slower though. You don't know what you really love 'til you lose it.

I have a 64GB one in my desktop for a boot drive, and I got to say, it makes the entire system feel more responsive. Plus I also have a 240GB one in my laptop, and the system flies. Games load so fast too.

Specs for both are in my sig.
