The Asus VH236H and Asus VH238H are easily the best monitors you can get south of $200.
Maybe I can get something better north of $200.

I meant to say south of $300, but I digress.
I wouldn't consider anything less than a Dell U2711 a "fancier" upgrade over an Asus VH236H or Asus VH238H for gaming.
Considering your budget is $300, that's not really all that feasible.
Smaller Dell IPS panels just aren't really worth it. Go big, or go home.

Maybe have a look at the Samsung BX2331? Not sure why but I was never too fond of Asus LCDs.

As far as I know, the LCD panels Asus uses for their monitors are manufactured by Samsung.
