Which SSD?

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
After being quite in the dark about SSD's i've started researching them and decided I would like a boot/OS drive + possibly some games for my sig machine.

I have narrowed my choices based on recommendations from several threads to:

OCZ 60GB Vertex 2E SSD 2.5" SATA-II
Read = 285MB/s, Write = 275MB/s 50,000 IOPS
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/225415

Crucial 64GB Real SSD C300 2.5" - SATA-III 6Gb/s - Read 355MB/s Write 75MB/s
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/225804

Crucial 64GB 2.5" M4 SSD SATA-III 6Gb/s - Read 415MB/s Write 95MB/s
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/264770

However I am still confused as why the Crucial M4 and C300 is highly recommended with such a low write speed compared with the Vertex 2E. Is read generally more important than write?

I have read some threads about the reliability of the Vertex 2E being pretty poor, though the reviews on ebuyer.com are all positive.

Or would it be better waiting for the Vertex 3 firmware to be fixed and upgrade to one of them depending on the performance/reliability?

Any suggestions would be great, thanks in advance!

only time I write is upon installs. I rather have reads than writes. Go M4 or C300. Crucial makes great SSD. Im not a fan of the OCZ's

I have been very happy with my c300s. I would say you can't go wrong with them or the m4.

Go for the Crucial 64GB Real SSD C300. Highest IOPS of the three, which is very beneficial as a boot drive/OS install.

Thanks for the input guys!

I was leaning towards the M4, what is the main difference between the C300 and the M4?

M4 ->
Random 4k READ 40,000 IOPS
Random 4k WRITE 20,000 IOPS

C300 ->
Random 4k READ 60,000 IOPS
Random 4k WRITE 15,000 IOPS

As a boot drive, read IOPS will be much more important for speed in loading times. That said, 15,000 write is a huge leap from traditional hard drives that peak at around 90 IOPS.

Ah thank you +rep for you sir!

Last question:

My board only supports Sata II, would these speeds be greatly affected or will it be pretty negligible in real world usage?

Sata II will limit your read speeds to around 300mb/s, which is not a huge deal for the c300.

Thanks Allen, after reading around a bit more as well I've decided to go for the c300. Next time I upgrade my mobo I will be getting Sata III anyway. Thanks for all your help!

Actually, SATA2's limit is in Metric MB, so it's more like 285MiB/sec. (Thus most benchmarking software peaks somewhere under that - unless the benchmarks are in Metric MB as well)

C300 and M4 are a good choice. M4 is a bit newer. Apparently they made some firmware changes that should increase lifespan a bit. But C300's aren't dying yet after years, so I wouldn't worry.
