32 vs 64 bit system ?

Are 64 bit systems faster ? does 4 gb vs example 16 gb ram make that much difference, can you play all games that normally go under 32 on a 64 bit system ?

32 bit systems can't even use 4GB, above 4GB doesn't matter for games, all games are programmed in 32 bit anyways. But x64 still good to have because it's like...twice the bits, yo.

So does 3 gb (1gb for graphic) vs 16 gb make such an extreme difference ?

Is that 3GB RAM + 1 GB dedicated or 2GB + 1 GB dedicated?

With the first option, it's fine if you close other programs while gaming. With the 2nd, I think that may not be enough.

Once you go over 4GB, the only advantage is that you don't have to quit other programs.

It does not quite work like that.

A 32-bit OS has 4GB of addresses but legacy support, devices, and swap space are needed so they eat away at the available addresses. This leaves less than 3.5GB for RAM. A 1GB video card will not use 1GB of addresses.

Before you go any further, you really need to understand what a 32-bit and 64-bit OS are. Read: http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/10...just_the_ram/1

Nobody is saying 16gigs of ram is right for anyone.

The ability to even address all 4GB of ram is worth the difference, there arent really any downsides to 64 bit.

64 bit can run 32 bit programs just fine. Not vice versa.
x32 has legacy support, and can use x16 installers, and depending on the x64 OS you are using, you can also have legacy support. if you are using windows 7 pro, or ultimate, you have legacy support. i am currently on my home premium x64 laptop, and i get aggrivated because it cannot run a lot of the open source programs that i run on my x64 ultimate gaming desktop.

x64 legacy support is getting better for home premium as time goes on, but it still isn't great.

you can use more ram in x64, for example my laptop has 6gb of ram, and when i am using a 32 bit (x86) OS, i can only use 3.5gb of that ram.

I'm pretty sure there isn't an actual difference but I find 64bit somehow faster just in general.

Just my opinion on it, not a fact.

But on the fact side, you should really be running a 64bit OS at 4GB of RAM.
