Whats YOUR opinion on fake surround sound gaming headsets? - Page 9

anything by Turtle Beach, Razer, or Plantronics makes me cringe.

But somehow people keep buying those damn things claiming they work so as to justify their purchase.

As a hardcore fps gamer I hate surround sound headsets. I prefer left/right sounds for more precise pinpointing for my fps games.

Here are two headsets I've purchased: Razer Carcharias & Creative Fatality.

Carcharias: Left/right. Absolute dominance in competitions. Helped me reached finals where my team lost to the country's WCG team - They were sponsored by Steelseries in case you want to check out their headsets as well.

Fatality: Surround. Tried it at home and loved to use it in all my games EXCEPT for fps games as the sound was too vague for me to correctly figure out exactly where the other team was. For example. My left/right set will tell me the guy's on the left. Surround sound makes it so that you hear the bugger from BOTH sides, which is realistic in a sense, but I want to win, not hear pretty sounds.

Note that I did not absolutely curse either headset down to a bottomless pit but I saw them at a very Practical perspective. So choose what best suits you, not what others say is the best for you.

..So much fail.

Being angry and passionate doesn't prove your point either. That's really sad if you've spent your entire life working with audio, and you still can't understand how surround works. Speakers are meant to be heard together, and at a distance. Cramming them next to each other doesn't work. That's why old stereo recordings (e.g. Beatles) sound horrible on headphones.

If "real" headphone surround worked, all competitive FPS players would use them. AFAIK, none of them do. Go to an "MLG" or "e-sports" event and you'll see Sennheisers or (if they're sponsoring) Astro and Creatives. The fact is, many people here have tried these "real" headsets (including myself), and we know they're horrible compared to decent stereo positioning. It only takes one driver to induce delay and mimick direction from right or left. It can be more difficult to simulator direct front or back. but splitting that one driver into 3 smaller lower quality ones does not help.

It's funny that you bash the Psyko headset, since it's easily the best of "real" surround headsets, which of course isn't saying much.

But yeah, good bye.
Was that not passionate enough?

I am glad I received my Psyko 5.1 headset for review purposes, so it means I did not pay anything for it. It was undoubtedly the worst 5.1 or 2.1 sound I have ever heard. The fact that it sold (and it did sell by the way) for $300 is astounding.

The best of real surround headsets? The sound of echoes down tubes was nothing like 5.1 surround of any kind.

I know. It's still horrible, but sadly enough it still beats cramming tiny drivers into earcups.

I bought a Speedlink Medusa 5.1 for gaming and it was dire. It was heavy, poor build quality and worse sound.

I returned them about bought a decent stereo set and love them! Surround sounds emulation is just as good. Ultrasone use offset drivers as well so sound hits the ears at different angles!

Well Narzon, you should try the P531 from Arctic Sound or the CyberSnipa 5.1.

The two headsets are nearly identical and they are based on the C-Media USB Host-based chipset. Terrible, terrible headsets.

I can imagine.

And if I'm reading this correctly off of Arctic's website..it's four drivers in EACH ear? That's some stellar 5.1!

if I get some headphones someday, I'll hook them into a watercooling loop
