Recommendation of gfx card - Page 2

people always recommend graphics cards without asking what setting you wanna play on. I got the 580 cause im hoping for high for games coming out this fall. If medium or low is fine 6950. My 250 gts still ran every game on the market on low with decent fps till i built my curent rig. Witcher 2 caused my upgrade haha.

I would go with the 570 simple because you can use the 260 for Physx. Other than that you are going to get people with ATI saying ATI and people with Nvidia saying Nvidia (for the most part). You most likely will not be disappointed with whichever card you purchase.

Out of those I'd choose the GTX 570 unless you plan on going over 1080p resolution, in which case I'd say go 6970....

Well I am going to be playing on 1920x1080 which is my current monitor but I am thinking of buying a second monitor further down the track. It seems everyone is in favour of the the at cards I would most probably buy a 6970 if I was getting an ati card. I just read a lot of posts saying that the gtx 570 has better support for physx and is generally faster but I could be wrong.

I agree with the above, from T_S.
Plus with the options you gave, you kinda handcuffed us!
The 480's have really come down in price.

But ultimately, you should keep what you have, and save up some extra cash, & read some more reviews about when Kepler may be coming out. If you think it's still gonna be a while, by then you may have enough saved for a nice GTX580

Low-medium on a 6950? Dang dude, whoever sold you that weed put some bad stuff in there ...

It is definitely not the king of cards and is no match for the 580, but that card @ 1080p does a pretty darn good job for its price...

@OP:
If you are going with ATI, you could go 6970 since it is the more powerful of the two. However, a 6950 would be cheaper and you could always Xfire or wait till the next generation before a more expensive upgrade (or Xfire then since they'll be even cheaper )

The 570 is neck in neck with the 6970 and Nvidia has done a good job with their exploding cards business so that won't be a problem now unless you play with volts too much. I went with a 6970 simple because I like having 2GB Vram. Also, Catalyst 11.6 is reported to have further bumped the 6970's performance is most games so I think I'd lean towards that. Hopefully, we some some benches with the latest drivers to see if it is really worth it just for that

i got a 2gb 6950 and unlocked it to 6970 , i can play any game maxed @ 60fps + .. Even in eyefinity i can max a few games out at 6020x1080 with no AA ofcoarse but every game works smooth at 4800x1080 .

except crysis and a few other poorly coded games .

I think Crysis cripples most setups! LOL

If cost is the issue, the cheapest 6950 I found was $229.99 1Gb Vram
I also found the MSI GTX 480 with the twin Frozr for $299.99 1.5Gb Vram

I'm not gonna argue which is the better bang for the buck, or best performer, cause I am biased towards MSI & nVidia!

Just putting it out there!

Yeah i probably should have mentioned that my budget for the new card would be around the $350 mark or a a little bit more.. i just don't want to be going over $400 which is what most cards below the leading card are priced at. E.g. gtx580 500+ having read all these posts I am really starting to lean toward changing to ati now.

I just have a question someone on this thread mentioned running my gtx260 as a physx card can someone clarify why this is necessary? might be a noob question but I am gona ask it anyway.
