Insane or not insane an overclock will make those mosfets run alot hotter and for no more effort than what is involved it would be well worth the small amount of trouble to make the MB last alot longer.

Any ideas on the orientation of the cooler or am I forced to install it with the fan facing down?

deltatux

Hey, I have used the exact same cooler for a while in a 790x-ud4p.

I am sad to tell you that, yes, you must make the cooler face up or down on an AMD board. I was very sad when finding this out myself.

I recommend pointing it away from any video cards and toward the psu if it is top mounted, that way it will not blow any hot air on the video cards, and the air will be sucked out the psu.

I've used that cooler on an AM3 build as well. Had to leave it in the rotated position. Obviously not ideal for airflow, but gotta work with what you got. If your friend is overclocking, I'd recommend getting a beefier 120mm cooler anyway.

Unfortunately, he doesn't have a branded PSU (I know you should never run a generic PSU but my parents cheaped out on his rig, what could I do, I'm out of money myself else I would have bought him a budget Cooler Master PSU which is better than the generic). Since it's a generic PSU, it only has a small 80mm fan blowing out the PSU on the back and isn't like the PSU I have which has a large 120mm fan at the bottom of the PSU sucking air into it.

So is it safe for it to blow up towards the PSU instead of blowing down to the expansion slots? I don't have any PCIe cards on the first slot, so the first slot on the motherboard is vacant. The PCIe x16 slot is the second expansion slot on this motherboard.

Ya, he has a dual core. Even with my Phenom II 810, my MOSFETs don't run hot (I can touch it for a long time without it burning my fingers at all) so I never bothered with a cooler.

Anyways, back on topic ... so based on what I said above, should I install it facing the PSU or down towards the expansion slots?

His PSU doesn't have a bottom fan, so I'm afraid it might just heat up the bottom of the PSU.

I would think that the this cooler is probably good enough even with the wrong rotation and lack of airflow to do the job as long as the OC is kept fairly low. I mean, it's just a dual core athlon. I bet they stay pretty easy to cool.

Stinks that you found out the hard way like me though. These AC coolers are tough little buggers, and will stand a very mild oc on a quad core if you are careful.

So should the fan face towards the PSU or to expansion slots then? Since this is the first time I've been stuck in this situation...

Why do vendors still sell this thing? Because people will buy it. Mine is sitting in its box as a terrible reminder of how I must do lots of research before I buy anything.

For those of you who do not have an Arctic cooling Freezer Pro7 - don't buy one.
