160gb HDD showing up as 55gb?!

Thread Starter
So my dad's HP laptop died a while back and it was just sitting around so I decided to take out the HDD and put it to use as an external hard drive. I opened it up and it looked like a pretty good drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 2.5" *160GB*. After clearing and reformatting TWICE, it still shows up as 55 GB of usable space.

Is there like a hidden partition that I cannot delete? I understand that I am unable to use the full 160GB but losing 100GB?! That's a lot...

try MiniTool Partition Wizard and see if it shows a partition, other than that maybe the harddrive is dying.

This, or whatever partition program you want to use.

If there isn't another partition the drive likely has thousands of bad sectors, and i'm surprised it's still running.

Okay i'll get right on that.

And yeah the laptop died. I think I might have done it by doing long spans of a few hours gaming non-stop without a cooling pad...LOL

First the network card went out then the whole thing just wouldn't post. I'll try fixing it this summer hopefully haha.

You can cook a laptop pretty easily if you're not careful.

Oh wow well I just found out something that makes me look quite stupid....

Apparently the drive has been split up into two separate drives (F:) and (G:). Both of them add up to around 150gb so I think I found my problem.

Now how do I put these two drives back into one? haha

You have to merge the partitions.

Search for partition in the control panel and use the windows utility.

use disk management, start > right click computer > manage.

open disk management from there, and delete the separate volumes and right click the empty space to make a new one

What most people call "Drives" are actually "Volumes" - Volumes usually have a drive letter associated with them.

Your drive is split into two volumes or partitions. Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) and delete both partitions/volumes, then create a new one that fills the entire drive.

Everything you need is built into Windows, and has been since Windows 2000...
