ASUS Matrix GTX 580 vs. GTX 580 Lightning

Thread Starter
I got my GTX 580 Lightning two weeks ago, still didn´t get a chance to open it because I am waiting to get all the parts for my build.

Today it has come to my attention that the Matrix 580 everbody is talking about is available in my country.

I got the Lightning because of its great overclockability, cooling and resell value since this is only a temporary build and I am determined to sell my GA OC motherboard and gpu for Kepler and new board.

Now I know overclockability is mostly determined by the chip but the Lightning has a lot of power delivery inducing features etc etc which made me choose it over the DCU II GTX 580.

I am very conflicted because I still have the chance to return the Lightning at this point and get my money back in order to to get the Matrix.
As a matter of fact I only got the Lightning because the Matrix wasn´t available then, because if it were I would have thought twice about getting the Lightning.

The Matrix should also have a great resell value and good cooling.

But what really matters to me is the better probability of a better chip and the better overclocking enhancing features to ensure a higher overclock.

Also a quiet cooling solution would be quite nice

The fact that the Matrix is a triple slot card does not matter to me just FYI and since I am selling it anyway SLI won´t happen either.

So it comes down to quieter and better cooling and better overclocking.
1.)Sell Lightning and get Matrix?

2.)Keep Lightining and be happy?

sry but it is really a headcracking decision here^^

I mean in terms of both card´s overclockability there can´t really be a clear winner since the chip decides at least 60% of the overclocking success.
Since both cards could have bad or good chips that factor is determined by luck.

But we can compare overclock enhancing features such as the phases , switches , power delivery capability etc etc.

So in terms of the overclocking enhancing features , cooling efficiency , cooling noise and overall specs & goodies

which card would be the winner?

Ive posted 3 reviews of the matrix, they where done by techpowerup, geeks3d, and guru3d. All of which showed a medicore oc with respect to expectations.
This card is overpriced for what it is, add to the not so great oc that we saw (at least till this time) i suggest you keep the lighning as it will definitly oc more.
This card barley oc-ed more than its little sister DCuII varient.

Like I said I personally don´t care about slot spacing and noise as long as the card will overclock well.

After all the great reviews , expecations and predictions of the Matrix exceeding the Lightning in terms of performance and overclockability it actually performed worse lol?

Is there any structural difference between the PCB of the Lightning and the Matrix?
More specifically is there anything distinctive about the Matrix compared to the Lighting?

I mean there has to be a reason why people said the Matrix would overclock much better than the Lightning (putting chip influence out of consideration of course) and perform better.

Was it all a fluke?

I friggen love my DCUII 580. Max load temp is mid 60s with the fan at 50%, which is barely audible over my H70 xD.Dunno about the lightning, but it wasn't available in my country. I also think that triple slot must be for a reason, and if you aren't going to SLI, then it's amazing.
I max out BFBC2 without passing the 60ºc mark on ANY component. jizz.

But, the matrix has a 1000€ price mark. correct if wrong. Go for the lightning or DCUII. (both non ref PCB)

BTW if you're in the mood to prank a family member or friend, put the DCUII fan at 100%. Louder than a tsunami + windstorm + rain + lightning combined.

I am basically looking for a 1GHZ oc for benching and 950MHZ stable for gaming.

So again:

1.)Is there any crutial physical/structural differnece between the Matrix 580 and Lightning 580 PCB which could decide over their overclockability and performance?(such as amount of phases, switches for more preciese voltage tuning etc etc)

2.)Why was the Matrix 580 predicted and expected to surely outperform the Lightning in terms of overclocking and performance?(chip influence not considered)

In my country Austria the Lightning cost me 460€ and the Matrix is available for 470€ so money , triple slot spacing etc does not matter in this specific situation

Here the Matrix available to me:http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a648568.html
it does not say ROG anywhere but I think there is only one version of the GTX 580 Matrix

Ill try to answer the questions.
Generally asus's engineers have more experience. Both have aprproximatley the same pcb size, but the lightning boosts 16 pwms while the matrix has 19. Interms of logic 19>16 so it will oc more, no.
It all depends on the quality of the phases and their tweaked temp. Both matrix and lightning like cool temps, basicly most pc hardware does. But to this day there are only 3 reviews and the oc was not so much, highest is TPU's with 966mhz, which is do-able on most lightnings.
So we have a big brand name , Asus, a 3 slot cooler, matrix moniker, 19 phases, 2x8pins. Versus msi, dual slot, 16phases, 2x8pin.
There are cool features in both, but to me they are usless. I really like msi's monitoring the mem/vrm temps. That way we might have an idea about whats safe of a voltage increase, since gpu temp isnt the main factor.
