ASUS Matrix GTX 580 vs. GTX 580 Lightning - Page 2

lightning for sure, they both pretty much will oc the same, will probably get the matrix if my motherboard have a red and black theme color.

Generally asus's engineers have more experience. Both have aprproximatley the same pcb size, but the lightning boosts 16 pwms while the matrix has 19. Interms of logic 19>16 so it will oc more, no.
It all depends on the quality of the phases and their tweaked temp. Both matrix and lightning like cool temps, basicly most pc hardware does. But to this day there are only 3 reviews and the oc was not so much, highest is TPU's with 9660, which is do-able on most lightnings.
So we have a big brand name , Asus, a 3 slot cooler, matrix moniker, 19 phases, 2x8pins. Versus msi, dual slot, 16phases, 2x8pin.
There are cool features in both, but to me they are usless. I really like msi's monitoring the mem/vrm temps. That way we might have an idea about whats safe of a voltage increase, since gpu temp isnt the main factor.
Yes in the meantime I have informed myself about the Matrix a little and it has more phases than the Lightning.
Ultimately these 2 additional phases won´t make more of a difference than 5% max^^
Since that is the only physical difference in both card´s PCB design ..the chip will be the deciding factor of the oc.

Coolingwise I have heard great things of both the DCII and TWFIII so there also should not be much of a difference in cooling efficiency and noise...even though some reviews show the DCII to be slightly quieter

The most important question to me right now:

1.)In the reviews of the Matrix 580 it did not achieve a very high oc ...was that intentional ..meaning did the conductors knowingly not try to achieve the max overclock ? or was it the cards fault in not being able to overclock far enough?

2.)Is that the new Matrix?
Because i heard it should be released August but that site already has got it^^ The thing is ... it does not say "ROG Platinum" ...is it still the Matrix 580 or are there different versions?

Well if are prepared to take the risk then go for it, as im sure your aware cpu's are different so are gpu's. You could be landed with a card that doesn't overclock as well as the one you already have, doesn't mean that it's bs or it's crap, jus the luck of the draw. My advice keep the lightning.

Yeah I will keep the Lightning due to the fact that th Matrix is obviously just advertised as overclocking wonder

Even though the chip decides a lot of the overclocking efficiency there still hasn´t been any Lightning that did clock at least 940MHZ

19 phases won´t hopfully make the difference^^

But if we would approach this problem more objectively ..ASUS is the older and more experienced company.
Also there has to be some justification for the price of the Matrix^^

Pretty weird but it looks like MSI keeps the ball for the most performance efficient GTX 580 on the planet

these custom pcb cards are ment for guys running on ln2 and guys that see that want to buy it cuz they seem them oc so high

but i would just keep it unless you like how the asus looks go for it, there going to oc about the same but why do you have its 1ghz in your specs if you havent used it lol

lol that is "meaning to clock @ 1GHZ" hahaxD

I personally just can´t believe they will clock the same after all the fuzz ASUS has made and the price difference lol?

Do they really justify the more expensive price with 2 more phases and some stupid buttons?

The DCII at least performs better and a little quieter than the Twfin Frozr III at least so I have heard but still no justification for the much higher price in my oppinion.

If both cards are gonna clock the same there is no actual reason to consider the Matrix.

Altough in this video TonyTomLogan aka Brithishteethmonster clearly states that the Lightning could go over 1GHZ but if he goes over 960MHZ the scores begin to drop because the chip is automatically throttling.

Silicon Lottery

I just hope for a 1GHZ bench clock and 950 stable gaming clock
And if the Lightning is the card which will achieve that then I wlil go with it

Pricing is just a way of affecting people's mind; higher price equals better quality, or so they say. We both know that's not necessarily true, so I'd ignore that factor.

Yap Stefy good point

And just FYI for those people that claimed the 580 Matrix to have 19 phases it only has 16

The 590 Mars has 19 phases

Matrix = Lightning

Only that the Matrix is using Military Class 3 components and Lightning Military Class 2^^
Which is a little loss but *** right?

No actual fact here, but I lean to the way of thinking of DOM. These cards are built like tanks, but for a reason. The reason is so they can handle tons of abuse and clock very high with LN2. ON stock cooling they can only clock so far and they will be very similar to each other. Thats just my opinion with not much to back it up. Cards will only clock so high with ambient cooling and difference between custom coolers is likely very small. The limiting factor at that point will be temps and cooling, not how well the card is built.

ROG is junk, software support is abysmal.
On the hardware side it's a great card, but being forced to use the Asus software is the deal breaker.
