GTX 460 problems - Crashing etc.

Hi all,
Recently I recieved a Zotac GTX 460 SE (1GB) from a relative which has replaced my 9800GT. However, I put it in and had trouble starting up, I got black screens with 'No Signal' for the first few boots until the card decided to get going. After that I was getting driver crashes and black screens with 'No Signal' for a few seconds and in that time the clocks would drop to the lowest (51, 101, 135 according to MSI Afterburner) then come back on as normal.

I messed around with nividia control panel and ended up with Max performance set and Single Monitor mode, I also did a clean install of the drivers with driver sweeper. This seemed to cure my problem for a week or so until it all came back again, black screens in game, crashing randomly when browsing the internet etc. I've tried the latest drivers and they gave me the same problems.

Temps are fine, it doesn't go above 60-65C on load and is never running at 100%. It's not overclocked, I've even tried underclocking it slightly to no avail. My PSU should easily power it, so it can't be that (OCZ stealthXstream 2 700W), all I can think is that it's a faulty card and an RMA is in order.

Any ideas?

Try to re seat the card . some pins may not be connected totally . and swap the PCI-e power cables . Sound like the card is fine if it powers up , and "runs" , but i might be wrong . If re seating didnt work , than contact support , and RMA it .

I have had similar problems as you with every driver after the 266.58 release (especially when folding, overclocked or not), hence I only use 266.58, could be worth a try.

I've actually re-seated the card about 3 times in total since I got it, twice to make sure it was connected and a third time when I got a new case, so it can't be that. I've also tried swapping the PCI-e connectors but that didn't work either.

I'm currently using the 270.61 drivers as they seem 'more' stable than the 275.33 drivers. However, I haven't tried the 266.58 drivers, as you suggested, MisterMalv, so I'll give those a go and report back.

Thanks for the help so far guys

I think its a problem with the card itself.

Yep, just tried installing the 266.58 drivers and the card froze in Safe Mode, then again once I rebooted. Finally managed to clean off the current drivers and tried to reboot to install the 266.58 drivers. The card didn't like that and black screened with 'No Signal' every try. Have put my 9800GT back in for the time being and will RMA the 460 ASAP.

Those symptoms are not always caused by software. I had similar problems with a GTX295. It turned out there was something green growing on the PCI-Express teeth, which was causing interference between the contacts and the slot. I used brasso and clothe to completely remove the gunk from the teeth and then I used alcohol and coffee filters to thoroughly remove the brasso.

If you attempt that BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL not to rub off transistors and EXTREMELY CAREFUL to completely remove all chemicals and let the card dry before trying it out.

It's a good point, however my mobo is relatively new and looks clean, I did check. Plus the 9800 works fine, so that would indicate PCI-E slot is clean?

Not the slot, the teeth on the card itself. When I say PCI-Express teeth, I mean the metal teeth on the card that fit into the slot.

I wouldn't bother trying to clean out the PCI Express Slot itself. To clean out a PCI Express slot I use alcohol and a folded piece of coffee filter which I repeatedly insert and remove like a video card. Then I blow it out with compressed air and let the board dry. That is almost never the problem. Usually it is the card, not the slot.
