Kraft Case and HTPC Parts List

Thread Starter
So I've been thinking about buying a network streamer and use it in combination with a NAS enclosure but with the amount I'd be spending it would be cheaper to make an HTPC as I already had a lot of spare parts lying around.

I already have:
Athlon II 6400+ BE (AM2)
8500GT 1Gb
400W PSU
DVD Drive
DDR2 Ram (will 2gb be enough?)
PS3 Remote with Bluray dongle for use with wmc or similar.
Cabling
Abit AN-M2HD Motherboard
4 port Raid card

All I need now is a case!

I'll be running 1 laptop drive for the OS and then 4 drives for storage in 2 raid mirrors. The dvd drive will be ide for now (bluray later) but I'll have to add my raid card Preferably some good onboard audio options.

I found this case by Kraft for £50. I tried searching online for reviews or better views but as its from Korea there aren't many to be found. I really like the look of it with the DVD flap and pop out cover for usb ports. I think I'll be able to fit the harddrives in with some brackets or something.

Will this be powerful enough to run windows 7 adequately with HD. The cpu and gfx were able to run HD on my sig board but I havent tried them with Windows 7.

Any experience, suggestions or reccomendations of other cheap cases that will fit the parts and look good would be great.

Oh yeah, thats enough power to run Windows 7 and play 1080p videos without a problem. It has a optical audio input thats capable of 7.1 surround which is great as well. Video card seems to be adequate as well. 2gb of memory is fine. With all of that said, you should easily be ably to play 1080p MKV's without a problem and be able to utilize the onboard 7.1 audio to play DTS as well. I cant look at the case due to me currently being at work (they have ebay blocked).

You might want to look at this for a HTPC keyboard, someone here reccomended it in another forum and I've been very happy with it in my living and bedroom: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823176018

Thanks, I've never used optical before now despite having the cables so that should be fun to play with. That keyboard would be pretty good, especially with the mouse functions as it wont get lost in the mess that is my living room! I'll have to look into finding one for cheap in the uk although one with a trackpad would surely be more precise (but expensive...?) Logitech DiNovo or something.

I just read its a low profile case so the 8500 won't fit, maybe have to see how performance is with the onboard before looking for low profile gfx. Hopefully by that time the low profile HD5570 etc will have come down. Need to double check my PSU is micro ATX.

The onboard graphics might do the job but just check on it first. I totally forgot that you were in the UK, the divino seems to have great reviews as well, you might want to look into that one as well. I know there are a bit pricey for me. you might want to search eBay for another case, sometimes they already include a PSU (but it might be crappy though). Id just look into a case that will be able to fit your current parts, that way you wont have to spend more, no sense in buying parts when you really dont need them. Look for a Silverstone Sugo (or soething around that), they are pretty nice and will fit all of your parts. Hope this helps any.

Does the case come with Mac & Cheese?

Nah, Rig looks pretty good for what you want it for.

Otpical out.
Optical can do 5.1 in DTS/AC3 and can only do 2 channels lpcm.
The gpu is lacking quite a bit actually. Cant remember off the top of my head but it can only accel certain file formats.
Again s/pdif can only do 5.1 or 2 channel lpcm.

Ok, I looked at the specs from their website ant it said it was capable of 7.1 audio output. The gpu should be fine, I built a Athlon X2 6000+ with a cheap mobo, 2gigs of PC-6400 and a cheap 128mb pci-e radeon video card and it played 1080p mkv files fine. All of these parts were from scraps I had laying around the house. I threw in a 320gig hdd and loaded Win 7, and it runs like a champ. I ended up giving that system to my mom.

Okay, thanks. I'll be home next week so I'll get my hands dirty and set it up on an old tower case for some testing. I just assumed that if the motherboard had an hdmi port it would be able to output in HD. I guess 720 is good enough for now anyway. The current set up for my parents is a dodgy external harddrive between two 2 drives connected to an old laptop. That enclosure is terrible, the audio/visual ports on the back are broken and it has a tendency to power down unexpectedly... its going to damage the drives if I keep it for much longer (if it hasn't already!!!).

You could just try the HDMI form the motherboard and see what happens. it may be powerfull enough to play 720 or 1080p. Just give it a shot and see what happens. you may be surprised.
