Ubuntu for Gaming?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, thinking about building a budget gaming pc for around the £400 mark. But as my build only has an integrated graphics card I was going to get rid of the Windows 7 64 Bit and use the money I would have used for that for a Graphics Card (ATI 5850 HD 1GB). Anyway my question is seeing as Ubuntu is free is it any good for gaming?

Thanks Guys, also where can I post my current proposed build for my custom pc and get feedback?

Budget Gaming PC Build:

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2 GHz Processor (Will Overclock to 3.6GHz)

£407

Graphics: ATI 5850 1GB

Case: Antec One Hundred

OS: Windows 7 64 bit

MotherBoard: Asus M4A88T-M

Memory: 4GB of Crosair Vengeance 1,600 MHz, CL9 DDR3

PSU: 430W Corsair CX430

Hard Disk: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12

Optical Drive: LG GH22NS50

(Would like to upgrade to Blu-Ray drive later on, any recommendations?)

you can list the parts right here as long as you're at it.

Ubuntu however is not exactly the OS of choice for gaming, especially with an ati graphics card.

A few games run okay in WINE.
http://appdb.winehq.org/

Also, as stated, nVidia driver support is better in a Linux environment.

I have heard rumors that Steam, recently released for Mac, will soon be available on Ubuntu! If that is true, then I will be able to play CS:S, TF2, L4D and all of those goodies on a free OS! Lets hope this rumor is true!

Fully native valve games would be a boon to the linux gaming community. That said, its still just a tiny fraction of games overall.

3 things:
1 - If I were you I'd get a different case and video card. That case is just junk, and the ati card will have nasty support in linux. You would be far better off getting a cheaper one so you can accord windows, OR going nvidia so you can actually make sue of it under linux.

2-Take a look at the list of properly supported games in wine. Make sure those are the only games you intend to play because otherwise, there's a good chance it wont work unless you use windows.

3-ask yourself, if you are doing this mostly for gaming, is it really worth learning how to use linux and wrestling with a lot of your games, in order to save the cost of 1-3 of those games by not buying windows?

Don't take me wrong. I really do support gaming in linux if you have the time and patience to do it and don't mind that it will likely still suck a lot of the time. Its just that most people aren't really willing to do that. Heck, I'm highly reluctant to do it myself.

Keep in mind you won't be playing anything new for 6-12 months while WINE compatibility is worked out.
That's iffy in itself.

Really is just worth the cost to have Windows.

Infact just found out, that my mate is giving me his Windows 7 Installitaion disc, so it should all be good. But is everyhting else in my build good for gaming? Because of this I probbably will spend the spare cash on a case and maybe a graphics card.

ATI + Linux = Terrible (FWIR)
I'm using an old 7300GT on my second (old) rig with Arch and i was able to play wow just fine, smoother than windows btw. But ATI drivers suck or so everyone says, no reason to challenge that imo.

As you can see from my spec i have the same card you are planning to get and i was thinking about installing arch on this pc and see how TF2 + Starcraft 2 (my current games) play on it, i mean, an Arch installation will use like 500Mb RAM tops LOL(and i mean, TOP like you have a lot of stuff runing), its just wonderful(ubuntu is bloated if you ask me), but after further reading all i found was ppl crying blood cos ATI wont simple do 3D sad-smiley-002.gif
