I got a brand new driving force pro on CL for $40 a couple years ago. It's a great wheel.

Seriously, just get a 360 controller! I can't believe you'd even think of playing a racing game on a keyboard, because you only have on/off controls for everything (throttle and brake, and also steering). On the 360 pad you can actually feather the throttle/brake and steering is not always 100% in either direction.

(Obviously a wheel is best, but it's also a lot more expensive).

I know you say you don't like the idea, but how could you possible like the idea of playing on a keyboard more?

There are no current racing games that are mainstream that will play well on a keyboard. You have to go back to simple (and by today's standards crap) games from pre-2000 to find ones that play alright on keyboard (because they were often designed with keyboard in mind).

If you get a 360 controller, you can enjoy all the current games that are good. Grid, Dirt, F1 2010, rFactor; they're all virtually unplayable on keyboard, but fine on gamepad

you have to know the ways of a keyboard to be great at racing games with them.

you tap instead of hold a key to steer/accelerate. no wonder you just spin going into corners. think of it as if you were in a real car, with balls. If your car is going fast enough to race in a turn without sliding out in the first place, if you give it too much power the ass-end is going to kick out; but if you just tap the key, your not giving it the beans the whole time.

+1 for Trackmania! It's a PC exclusive and free racing game that's tonnes of fun and works brilliantly with a keyboard.

I know you can tap, I used to play with keyboard about ten years ago.

But more realistic games don't work as well with this, there are times when you just need, say, 60% steering (e.g. through a long high speed corner), and if you use the tapping method, you're going off the track.

Throttle is worse, how can you possibly hold the revs at 70% for a start for example? Coming out of a corner with no TCS, what do you do if the rear starts sliding out? Throttle off completely is your only option on a keyboard, but with a gamepad or dedicated pedals you can lift off just the amount you need.

Maybe in mario kart style games you apparently play it's okay, but as soon as you start playing anything more advanced you're going to realise that keyboard is horrible for games, and you can't be competitive at all with a keyboard
