L4D2 Random Crashing + Freezing

Thread Starter
For some reason recently whenever I try to play L4D2, it frequently crashes to the desktop randomly for no reason whatsoever, and an error pops up saying, "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library : The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." It crashes like this in single player and multiplayer.

Also during gameplay I notice frequent freezing for about a second, and then the game resumes, but freezes again like that constantly in random intervals.

I have multicore rendering disabled, and it still crashed with it enabled, and I also have VSYNC turned off. I have 2x Anti-Aliasing and 8x Anisotropic Filtering, and all the other things, such as model detail and whatnot are set to the highest setting. I normally get a constant 60 FPS in game.

Why am I crashing like this? On my old PC, even if the game lagged to around 20 FPS, it still never crashed and never froze/stuttered like this. I would have thought that this new PC would have no problems whatsoever, and it really pisses me off to be in the middle of a finale and have the game just crash on me.

Could be unstable CPU or RAM. Still, try updating the game to latest version, if you haven't. Also reinstall VC++, should be lurking somewhere in Add/Remove Programs. If all else fails, System Restore followed by a reset to stock freq/voltage.

Also install the 2008 runtime just in case. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29

Well, it appears both are already installed, but I will try the repair option on both. Also, ronnin426850, I have not ever overclocked anything on this Windows 7 install, and I have no idea where I would system restore to, because this problem has persisted for several days, and I don't know if it started before those days either because I have only played L4D2 recently. Also, L4D2 is updated to the most recent version always because it is the Steam version, and it automatically updates. I will see if using the repair option on these visual C++ versions fixed anything tomorrow.

No, using the repair option did not fix it. I will actually uninstall the 2010 version of the C++ and keep the 2008 version, because I don't believe I ever had these problems until installing the 2010 version for a program that required it but did not work anyway. I will uninstall the 2010 version and report back to see if it fixed anything.
