LOL, so do I

Don't do it through windows so you end up with the Windows.old folder... I noticed it saves so many useless files. I had several Gigs of stuff I didn't want at all left over the one time I did that.

I think the best way to do it with no problem is to back up all of your files and setups for any programs you want to keep. Completely reformat the drive, repartition it to desired sizes, and do a fresh install.

Remember to install your drivers before anything else when it's done.

Untrue. Even if you boot from the DVD, it still recognizes a previous installation and automatically backs it up. No need for 3d party backup software. It only takes time, where the backup done during install works instantaneous.

Also, why not install through Windows? The end result will still be the same - chean fresh OS. +no HDD driver issues.

Why? That's all so useless and takes hours!! With the WIndows.old, you just cut-paste your Music/Photos/Videos/Documets and delete the rest! Done is 60 sec!

Anyway. I gave my 2 cents. As long as I don't lose time when reinstalling..

Gwipe? Is that an acronym or program?
Also this may be a silly question but what data do you backup exactly? All your docs, pics etc... Im mainly concerned with the deactivation of my license keys on my programs i have. I guess i have to do a complete reintall of everything once the drive is reformatted?
This must be a lengthy process as i would need to get all the windows updates again, install my programs and get all their updates, aswell as reinstalling my video card drivers.
Im not moaning , i know its a good thing to do .

GWIPE is a program, that you can setup as a boot CD which will erase your drive.

I backup the important stuff manually; emails, documents, favorites, bookmarks, pictures etc. I then also make a backup image of my installation in case I missed anything manually.

To transfer installed programs from one Windows installation to another, you'll either need to:

A) Use the upgrade option, keeping everything installed in place while upgrading the OS around it.

B) Build two separate computers and use the 'Files & Settings Transfer Wizard' (XP) or it's Windows 7 equivalent to move installations over.

If you had malware then backup up won't be a good idea and any other hdd that was in the system needs to be cleaned as well.

But if its not due to malware then get Hiren BOOTCD
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hi...ootCD.14.0.zip

Here's to turn it into a bootable Usb
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/usb-booting/

Then when you bootup with it choose dos utilities. Then hdd tools and youll get a huge aray of zero wipers. do choose dban. It will be on your right at the top in the corner. Watch the magic happen
Cheers

Ok thanks alot guys. Quick question though, im guesssing all my drivers will be gone too? So will i have to get them too, like the motherboard for example?
Also I have been watching videos on this and most people seem to boot up, put OS CD in and boot from the CD? Obviously they back up first.

It is always smart to backup everything first. And yeah all your drivers will be gone so you will have to reinstall them.

You can format directly using Windows 7 DVD, either with that GUI menu or with the command line.
