IDE drive installation help...

Thread Starter
Hi. I installed an LG IDE DVD burner for my uncle. But as I didn't get the manual page for the drive, I couldn't get the settings of the jumper. So, I let it stay in the default position and removed the jumper from the hard drive. So, at present the DVD burner acts as the master and the hard drive acts as the slave. Both are connected to the same port on the motherboard. The PC is working fine. But is there going to be any sort of disadvantage or problem by letting the hard drive act as a slave and burner as the master? Thank you..

Optical drives should always be slaves, yes there will be disadvantages. Set the jumpers on the optical to slave and the drive to master, the IDE connection FARTHEST from the motherboard is the master, and the CLOSET is the slave.

I was under the impression either could be either.

Master gets most of the I/O when push comes to shove. Do you want that to be your optical drive or your HDD?

They can be either way round if you bother to use the jumpers.

Easiest way is to set all your drives to Cable Select, then plug the drive you want to be Master into the end connector (black) and the drive you want to be Slave into the middle (grey) connector. Plug the blue end into the motherboard.

This assumes you're using an 80-conductor cable - older 40 conductor cables aren't terminated properly to use Cable Select. And they also won't allow your HDD to operate above UDMA2 - ie it will be capped to 33MB/s.

Set both to cable select and your good. Or you can set the hdd to master and attach it to the first connection up from the motherboard connection and set the opti to CS and attach it to the last connection farthest from the motherboard connection.

that won't work - a drive you set to Cable Select and put on the farthest connector will be set to Master, so if you set your HDD to Master also you'll have 2 Masters and things won't work.

I got the LG drive's guide and set the dvd drive to slave and hard drive to master by setting jumpers at appropriate positions and it worked fine. I'm really sorry for the late reply because I had to go out of station on an emergency purpose. Thanks a lot to all of you.

Just FYI - the drive that can talk is determined by the drive select signal. The drive select signal is controlled entirely by the operating system and is actually initiated by the slave drive, not the master. In practice, master/slave makes no difference whatsoever and the faster drive will always end up with more I/O time than the slower drive.

ps- they are technically "drive 0" and "drive 1". Master/slave comes from the original ATA specification, which required every attached drive's spindle rotation to be synchronized to a single "master."
