RAM sticks only work in slot 4?

Thread Starter
I just put together a new rig. 2600k + asus p8z68-v pro with 2x4gb corsair vengeance ram. Both of the sticks work alone in slot 4 (user manual says slot 2 for just one stick but that doesn't work) and they do not work as a pair in either slot 1/3 or 2/4 ? I'm assuming this is a bad motherboard, but would like your opinions before I go ahead and RMA the board.

RAM slots rarely go bad. Guess where the memory controller is? On the CPU... So it's most likely a problem with how the CPU is seated in the socket, bent pins in the CPU socket, or too much heatsink pressure.

the pressure would make sense because i just reseated the cpu to apply new thermal paste. there are no pins on the 2600k as they lay flat. i will try to release some pressure from the heatsink later today when i'm off work. thanks for the advice.

I mean the pins in the socket. You should physically remove the CPU and check that none are bent like this

there are no pins on the back of the cpu. just copper blocks or whatever you want to call them. the back is basically flat though.

Yes I'm familiar with hardware. I've said it twice...... The pins in the socket of the motherboard! Nothing to do with the CPU.

dopamin3, you were right all along. I sent the motherboard back and newegg has sent me an email saying the pins were bent and they're not covering it. I'm waiting for the board to come back and to see if there is anyway to fix bent pins?

yeah, micrometric precision, a sharp eye, and a sharp thin tool. just bent them slowly so u don't break any. too much torsion-pressure can break it at the base = dead motherboard.

Just a little update. First off, thanks Dopamin, the whole issue was because of a bent pin. I bent it back and everything is working fine now and I have been in the process of OCing my rig.
