580 evga or asus

Thread Starter
what card would be better, to me they look about the same except asus posts a bit greater speeds and EVGA has double the memory, but for me to overclock the cards more, which one would handle it better and which would be more reliable. I have always owned EVGA and still leaning towards it. I could also go with a OC evga card with 1.5 gb on memory. not really sure

It all depends on what resolution you will be gaming at. If you are gaming on multiple screens or at a very high resolution (above 1080p) then you should get the 3072MB version. But if not, just get the DirectCUII from Asus.

Have you considered the MSi GTX 580 Twin Frozr II/OC?
If you don't mind the fatness of the GPU the Asus DCII is nice.

So, in result i dont really need 3gb or memory, so drop down to the 1.5gb, so then we can look at an evga OC card like the EVGA GTS 580 DS(dual fans) with OC, that has speeds close to the Asus but im guessing the Asus DCII will handle more OC'n due to the cooling system? And also never really been a fan of MSI

You don't need 3GB unless you're at least 1400p-1600p even then@ 2560x1600 only a handful of games or game mods will run you up past 1.5gb. Metro 2033, Witcher 2 with ubersampling, GTAIV with mods etc.

I have the Asus DCII and I love it. It has been able to handle everything I throw at it 1080p wise. Max settings (Black Ops, Dirt 3, Rift, MoH, Duke Nukem, Dungeon Siege 3 Demo) and it runs smooth as all hell (I don't run fraps so I can't give you a frame rate). If you are running a single monitor at 1080p, you cant go wrong. I have been having problems with the OC factor though, I try to OC it with ASUS's software (updated and everything) and games will not run for some reason. But since it handles everything I throw at it easily, I am not complaining. The only down side to this thing is the fact that it is not a reference card, so putting it under water is not going to be an option it seems. If I could find a waterblock for it, I would slap it on in a heartbeat (I would chop off the extra two PCI brackets). I've never owned an EVGA product but I have heard nothing but great things (My next high end setup is going to be EVGA so I can try it out), so with that being said I encourage the DCII. The ROG version seems nice, but you will probably only be paying for a name if you aren't doing anything special with the card OCing wise.

Again, with sig rig, I run everything maxed out. Primary display is my 42" Plasma at 1080p with a 27" 1080p secondary lcd monitor, zero choppyness on a single card. Can't go wrong my friend. However, you may want to hold off until the next-gen card comes out at this stage in the game. If your games run smooth now, just wait for next-gen since I am sure it will come out in another year or so. Unless you plan on throwing the 580 into a backup rig after a next-gen upgrade smile.gif

I couldn't fit two 3-slot cards on my mobo so I went with the MSI GTX 580 Lightnings. If SLI or fitment concerns don't matter to you, the Asus cards are very nice....
I have always loved eVGA's RMA process if you need it. I would go with a vanilla eVGA 580. IMO I have spent the extra cash for overclocked cards before and dont really think it is worth it. I have 2 Vanilla 580's in SLI and then run very smooth and low temps. Max everything.
EVGA FTW!!
