Potential Build for 3d Animation Rendering

Thread Starter
So I'm looking to build something new that will do well with rendering 3d scenes in 3ds Max, so obviously the number of cores the CPU has will be my max priority. As such, the best bang for the buck right now is looking like the Phenom X6 line. I haven't really paid much attention to AMD ever but they look like a fantastic bang for the buck type machine. Anyways, I saw this bundle pop up on TigerDirect and thought it may be a good deal:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...5624&CatId=332

I will need to buy a more powerful video card than what the onboard offers as well. As of right now I have 2 1080p 21.5" LCDs and 1 1080p 23" LCD so I will need something that can run all 3. I don't really need anything asap, but the money is there whenever the time comes, so I'm willing to wait around for a really good deal on a video card. I have a DVD drive and copious hard drives to go in it if necessary.

Basically what I'm looking for is the most bang for the buck and trying to keep it around $400, but up to $500. Like I said, getting the highest number of cores in the CPU is my main concern.

Thanks guys
Heimdall

Seems like this would be a situation that you would want Hypertransport.

I think I'm being misunderstood. I want best VALUE for rendering. Not just best rendering overall. I think you will find the X6 is the best value when it comes to 3d rendering. My question is can I do better for what I would be paying with that bundle.

If you want best value, the TigerDirect deal you linked has terrible value (as always), not to mention parts quality.
The motherboard uses 3+1 phase power on a heatsink that is shared with the northbridge (a.k.a. HOT HOT HOT), I would nearly expect it to blow upon contact with 125W x6 processor
The RAM is single channel.... this may be huge detriment to rendering performance
And of course, they try to stick you with a rather unreliable PSU to top it off.

Buy this instead:
Phenom II x6 1055T + PNY XLR8 2x2GB DDR3-1600 - $199 shipped, $179 AR
Gigabyte 760G AM3+ motherboard - $65 + $3 shipping - support expansion to FX-Series CPU incl. 8-core FX-series (notice: board is not for overclocking, will run this CPU safely at stock)
Seagate 1TB HDD + Sony 24X DVD - $67 shipped
Coolermaster Elite 310 + Coolermaster Elite 460W PSU - $50 + shipping [this is a PSU I can at least trust for low budget builds]
Total cost before rebates: $381 + shipping
After rebates: $361 + shipping

Note that I also ecommend making use of your budget to get better quality parts (i.e. better PSU & case, better motherboard).

xd_1771 pointed exactly what you would need to buy for your needs.
With a better mobo (for more money) you could get even more out of that CPU.

If you can afford it and really want to, get either of these mobos:
ASUS M5A97 EVO - 970 Chipset AM3+ - $118 shipped (FULL support of AMD FX Series)
ASRock 880G PRO3 - $100 + $7 shipping (Will run AMD FX Series CPU but not support turbo core feature as well as some power saving techniques)

Both can manage an OC on that 1055T and somewhere down the road you can pop in a 32nm AM3+ FX-Series CPU (which will sell in 4 to 8 core variants) no problem.

Hey, a good bit of RAM is worth investing into for this. Also, yeah the more cores a CPU has the better. Intels are way too expensive for the price point your looking for. Try looking for reviews on the AMD CPUs with 3Ds Max or general 3D rendering. As for the graphics card a good Quadro is the way to go. Depends if you are going to game too? If you are, then a geforce. Hope this helps .
