Upgrading CPU

Thread Starter
Alright hello,

so im upgrading my 9600 phenom 1 to a Phenom 2 955 3.2ghz with a motherboard M3N78-VM, which only allows me to add 150mV to the stock voltage... sadly.

my question is will i have be able to OC to around 4.0ghz? on stock voltage + 150mV, and 6gig of 800 DDR2?

Thanks!

While it is possible, 4GHz on that board might be pushing it to it's limits. You would have to put some heatsinks on the VRM's to keep them cool as overclocking that much will make them pretty toasty. Too hot and the overclock might not be stable or worse.

To answer your question, I'm going to say no, I bet it most likely will post, and it might even enter windows at this speed MAYBE, but you wouldn't be able to do anything with it, (game, watch movies, etc). The honest truth, is that if you're looking to do that kind of overclocking, you are going to need a better board. I know it can take forever to save up the kind of money it takes to upgrade sometimes, but a better board will most definitely aid you in unleashing this processors full potential, and WILL be worth your while.

Agree with Kraids. You MIGHT get 4GHz, but you'll need more then stock cooling for the CPU and the RAM. If you can get away from upping the voltage and stick with adjusting the multipliers you might have better luck. 3.6-3.8GHz might be more reasonable...but I think 4GHz is pushing it unless you use faster RAM and a solid cooling setup.

3.6 to 3.8 is probably as good as it will get. you will definatley have problems with mosfets getting reaaaal hot

With those VRMs, if they remain unheatsinked/uncooled (due to the Hyper 101A), you won't reach 4Ghz [safely, as determined by motherboard; it will start throttling due to VRM temps before even closing 4Ghz]. With the voltage-up limit , that probably adds to the unlikeliness.

I'm getting it sometime this week, I guess I could get some heatsinks for the VRMs, ram is cooled with a corsair fan, so it should be fine, I'm not sure if the mobo only allows 150mv for my current CPU and might be higher for the 955, idk, (im asking ASUS atm). I'm pretty happy with the stock speeds and benchmarks, just feel like getting it as far as I can

I'm sure it can do 3.6 - 3.7 because my Phenom9600 is at 2800 (stable, surprisingly), that's a 500mhz, the new CPU should be able to handle it w/ multiplier...

Anyways you guys probably know that CPU better than me ;P
