VLC has decent compatibility and a nice array of features, but it can't even play the videos properly! Thus, in my book, WMP still edges ahead of VLC as a video player. If your experience with them is different, I guess it's useless to try to persuade you - after all, everyone has different needs and tastes.
everytime i have ever used WMP in the past, i have been appalled by the terrible quality that it makes all of my videos. just low res, even playing off of a DVD didn't work as well as it should have.

i love VLC, and before you go spreading your horror stories, go download it and try it out. i install it on all the computers i build for people, because i know it will play everything, and in great quality. one of my favorite features is that if i am watching a video that was poorly put together, that has bars on the sides and bottom, i can select which portion of the video i want to view, and it will crop it down so i can view the video full screen.

I have tried KMplayer, didn't like how slow it was (how long it took to open)

oh, another thing i love about vlc, i can always click the spacebar to pause anything. that is something lacking on most other media players. even zune software makes me go click the stupid pause button.

winamp for day to day audio, cooledit pro 2.1 for slowing guitar solos...that type of editing

VLC for videos, never needed external codecs for a few years now

I have hated WMP for some time, couldn't play certain videos types without running to the net, and saying it can't do this or that....

Oh didn't I mention it? Silly me. I do have VLC on my ol' work laptop, along with MPC, cause I can't just go around uninstalling software on a PC that isn't actually my property. Installing new stuff, however, is a different matter
Anyway, while it is an old unicore, it can still easily play 720p videos and falls just short of full hd.
Yep. Same problems. Primarily - artifacting and hang-ups. Now, I do understand that the lack headroom in processing power might be contributing to the freezes, but MPC gives me none of that. Go figure. Since I've seen the same happen on C2D laptops, I'm not really sure processing power is the sole reason.
Anyway,I wonder if at least the artifacting part can be caught in a screenshot... I'll try doing that later. If I succeed, I'll report back with

Still, I don't see your problem - after all, all these "horror stories" are first-hand experiences and NOT baseless trolling. Heck, even in my first post I asked if there was a possibility that such issues had recently been fixed. No need to get all defensive

Oh, and the spacebar-pause/resume feature? MPC has it too. Yeah, it's a handy little feature, I completely agree with you there

Well, anyway, even if VLC DID magically pick me as one of The Chosen all of a sudden and all of its, I admit, handy features started working without a hitch, there are still at least 2 things that would make MPC more attractive to me:
GPU acceleration - I normally wouldn't be able to enjoy full HD videos. Now I sure can!
[opinion]VLC's HIDEOUS icons No problem with the shape, but when it's combined with orange, it becomes really nasty. [/opinion]

Media Player Classic for movies and FLAC. Been using it for years and never had any issues.

iTunes for mp3 and audiobooks. Have a strong enough PC so the library loads pretty fast. Like the tagging management too.

People actually use video players like VLC and MPC for listening to music? What?
Foobar2000+MPC-HC in 99% of cases for me. With my .iso files I use VLC though.
Best damn feature of VLC is the ability to open .iso DVD backups. It's how I encoded my DVD library.

While I generally use Foobar.. why not?
Double click on a flac file and open it up with VLC.. then listen. I really don't see anything wrong with that.

if it plays your music why is using something like mpc or vlc or any other video/media player bad?
