New Gcard for I7 system

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
My older graphics card, for my new system that I built, finally broke down, so I am left with the question of what to buy. My friend lent me his GTX260 for the meantime but its causing system instability during games due to its power draw, or age, or .....

I am running a i7-950 on a Sabretooth X58 with 3x2GB Ripjaws. I may go SLI or Xfire down the road but am looking for a decent single card solution at the moment.

I have been somewhat leaning towards the GTX460 with the MSI Cyclone or Hawk in mind, but am open to suggestions. What is the best cost/power ratio card that gets a good boost when I would double up on it later on.

I've been looking at Radeons too, but I've had Nvidia all my gaming life so I would prefer one, but I'm still open to em.

TIA.

Fill out your comp specs and then get yourself a 560ti with a nice cooler.

If you wanna get 560 Ti, maybe GIGABYTE will be the best for you, it has a dual-fans cooler and Ultra Durable materials, especially the classified GPU so you can OC the core to the higher clock by yourself, if comparing with the reference one in the condition of not tweaking the voltage, you can easily find that it can OC to the higher clock than the reference one.

Yeah there is a MSI N560 GTX TI Twin Frozr II OC for $250 on amazon, I'm a little worried about that double 6pin PCIE tho, gonna have to up my PSU then as well. Am running 550W atm which I think is borderline for my system, and it gets really toasty during gaming sessions. Is there a single 6pin PCIE gcard that you would recommend. Or should I upgrade my PSU as well and grab the Frozr.

*Sidenote* Been looking at the Corsair 750HX, any thoughts...... or that Antec HCG750

You should be fine as long as it's a quality 550w.

Its a Antec, but its at least 4 years old. I fear it has one foot in the grave and one on a banana peel. Also I've been checking various PSU calculators and most are giving me a 569 minimum wattage rating with some even recommending 788 when I said I would be going SLI down the road. Gonna ask this in the PSU forum area.

That HX750 with that current deal is pretty sweet if you have plans on going to the max. But overkill.

If you want to upgrade your PSU but have a tight budget, the XFX Core Edition PRO550W would be sweet given the deal --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-013-_-Product

There's also the 650w that's $10 more. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-014-_-Product

For the GPU, I would say the HD6950 2gb for $230AR is a good choice --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-368-_-Product

Also, please post your setup under User CP -> Edit System

There we go system put up. Somewhat of a amalgam of old case, PSU, and drives with new Mobo, I7, Ram and cooler. Had a limited budget at the time.
