Server HDD

hey guys

Bit of a stupid question becuase i dont get why there would be a limit

I have a HP proliant Dl140 G3

Maximum Internal Storage
Non-Hot Plug SATA 1TB 2 x 500GB
Hot Plug SATA 1.5TB 2 x 750GB
Non-Hot Plug SAS 600GB 2 x 300GB
Hot Plug SAS 600GB 2 x 300GB

Is it limited in the Bios? or was the manual just created before 1TB drives was created? lol

Thansk guys

On a server manual they describe the configs they have validated. They may have tested only up to those capacities so bigger drives should work. There could be a BIOS-related limit with over 1.5TB drives; 2TB drives are the max that can be addressed with he regular 2^32 address space - as such some controllers don't like the 2TB and don't support at all drives over 2TB.
Bottom line - you shouldn't have any problem with 1TB drives, but starting from 2TB you should do some testing.

I have a Proliant here that's older than yours (ML350 G4), and it runs a 2 TB drive just fine from the integrated SATA port on the mainboard. Chances are your newer server will also work just fine with a 2 tb drive.

Hey you up there ^^^ Sorry bud but a G4 is NEWER than a G3.

To the OP: Do you have a spare 1tb dtive laying around? If so your best best would be to upgrade the BIOS/Rom/RBSU, the BMS (iLO), and SAS/SATA controller firmwares from HP's website.

I was trolling around some of the internal sites here at HP and I could find nothing to show that 1tb drives were supported on that unit (doesn't mean they aren't with the newest firmwares). After all that unit is rather old for continued support... smile.gif

I do see a DL140 G3 out there for sale witha a 1tb drive from some company...

Some Compnay...

Sorry I could not be of more help.

Yeah, I wasn't able to find anything about it either, so I figured I'd just go for it, and trade in the 2 TB if it didn't work.
