Pentium G6950 GPU good enough?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Ive already got some hardware that i used in a SFF build a while ago. Now we are going to turn it into our HTPC and i was wondering if you think that a pentium G9650 would be enough to drive 1080p playback?

Forgot to mention that this pc is going to be a replacement for the cable box and storage for videos. We are using rips that are stored as .mkv's.

Specs:
TV tuner:
Ceton InfiniTV 4

CPU:
Pentium G6950

Motherboard:

Thanks!

Should be fine for playback; not sure about recording + encoding if you were going to do that with the Tuner.

Anyways, you already have the hardware so why not just try it out and see if it's fast enough for your purposes.

It's G6950, not G9650. As for whether it's enough for your stated use, yeah sure. A $50 dual-core Celeron Wolfdale should be capable of the tasks you mentioned even without GPU acceleration and the G6950 is faster than that. Caveat, the G6950 doesn't support HD audio bitstreaming, I believe.

It doesn't support Intel clear video technology, wonder if this means no HD audio?

How about for recording, you still think it could would record in HD fine?

Again, I already mentioned in my earlier post, no HD audio bitstreaming. If your playback software can decode HD audio, though, you can pass the decoded, uncompressed 7.1ch LPCM signal to your receiver. Unfortunately, Intel's not really very clear on what is and isn't included in Clear Video Technology.

Assuming you're talking digital signals already encoded in MPEG-2 (which the Ceton InfiniTV4 output should be), then yes, quite easily. You'd face an HDD bottleneck before you even begin to tax your CPU. Even a lowly Atom 330 had no issues recording 4 OTA HD shows at the same time and the G6950 should be at least 4x as fast.
