Maybe they just want to invest in the equipment to handle these kinds of connections. As it stands right now your run of the mill home router will not route at gig speed anyways. You would need to spend thousands from any company that has a worth while product to support that. On the isp side..well you probably get the picture. For a home user I agree its still kind of tough to imagine the need for such a speed but I can easily image the need for companies, I spec routers out for these kinds of connections everyday.

I agree, but at the same time, I'm not holding my breath till it happens. Eventually either a new competitor will enter the market and force a change, or the public outcry will get loud enough that these large, slow ISPs will be forced to upgrade. I don't see either happening for quite a while though, since we're all still willing to pay what they ask for the service they want to provide.

They don't care about steam.

Cable companies are deathly afraid of Netflix and the clones that are sure to come. I saw some amazing statistics regarding how likely someone is to drop cable when they have Netflix. I personally dropped my $70-$80 a month Dish bill for the $10 Netflix variety.

Eventually I see many if not all of the major TV companies setting up an ability to watch them on the internet. I'm surprised it hasn't already happened. THAT is what the cable companies are trying to stop.

Indeed. They aren't willing or able to compete with people who use netflix, so by capping use it still leaves you use, but forces you to reconsider how much streaming video you get. And yet at the same time they don't care if you leave your TV on 24/7 (assuming you have the TV sub, and most do due to bundle pricing making it cheaper to just get the TV with the Internet) because they're still being paid for it
