Another question: Since I'm using a full size motherboard, can i mount the power supply above the unused PCI slots...maybe even sit the psu on top of them? I'm trying to make the case roughly the same size as the motherboard itself, so I'd like to add height instead of width or depth.

Lowe's is expensive for acrylic; you can typically get better deals from your local sign maker. My local sign maker sells the raw acrylic at cost (even sells partial sheets) and can order stuff they don't have in stock, which will come on their regular trucks. Just for comparison, Lowe's sells 2x4 sheets of 0.220" extruded acrylic for $50/sheet and the sign shop has 4x8 sheets 0.220" cast cell (better quality) for $150/sheet.

There should not be a huge price difference on colored vs clear acrylic (maybe a few bucks for a 2x4 sheet); and it'd certainly be worth it over painting since you save yourself the hassle and cost of paint while achieving a much better result. Don't forget, your "cost" is not just in the price of materials but also the work you put into it.

Thanks for that, I'll check at a sign store to see what it would cost. Do they even make a flat black acrylic? I was hoping to stay away from gloss but, I might just go with gloss if I can find it at a good price.

Most acrylics will have a luster, but on solid (opaque) colors fingerprints etc are not nearly as visible as they are on translucent or particularly transparent colors.

If you are looking for something with a dull finish that isn't really susceptible to fingerprints, then I'd suggest going with Acetel (brand name Delrin; often only sold in black) or PVC sheet.
